Please help I have an 8 yr old boy who is desperate to know what tampax are for ? and why I put them down the loo? I keep trying to distract him from the topic but it keeps coming back up, I don't think he needs to know all the gory details, but I just don't know how to explain it in a round about sort of way!!!

tell him that when he sees them it means mummy is very grumpy and will shout at daddy loads
why do you need to explain it in a "round about way"? Perhaps if you didn't want to have this kind of conversation with him, you shouldn't have him in the bathroom whilst you are changing your tampons???

Anyhooooooooos........

Try looking here and then possibly wording it in words he'll understand?

When women mature they start producing eggs in their body so that they can have children if they want to. These eggs would attach themselves to the wall of the womb inside and when they are not used once a month this wall would shed its lining. You use tampax to absorb that discharge. Do you flush tampax down the loo? Some plumbers are gonna have a treat.
How come he knows that you put them down the loo, isnt it something that you do discreetly without him watching yu do it?
Why do you put them down the loo?
Crikey, I'm glad I left this one alone, when it first showed up. Thought if I answered it, I might say something out of place...but you guys have said exactly what I was thinking, what the hell is an 8 yr old boy doing in the toilet with his mother, changing her tampon? The mind boggles...
"Every month, Mummy has the chance to have a baby, but if she doesn't want another one, she has to use these to stop it happening." - That'll do for an 8-year-old, surely?
Dont flush tampons down the toilet.
Lots of people flush their tampons down the toilet as far as I know and it does say on the Tampax leaflet that you can ... anyway that is another debate as to which is better landfill or wherever it goes if it goes down the toilet ... If it was my son I would just be completely straightforward like one of the posts says, remember to him it is no different than asking why you are putting makeup on he is just curious and it is much better not to make a big mystery out of it. I would just say that all women have a nice soft place in their tummy if ever a baby comes then it grows in that, and if a baby doesn't come then you don't need it and it comes out of you just like having a pee.
he probably doesn't want or need to know all the details about menstruation yet; like lady_p_gold says, it's just something he's seen and is curious about. There won't be any special mystery about it for him unless you create one, so don't try distracting him, just tell it straight. Just say grown-up women bleed a bit sometime (making it clear you haven't cut yourself or anything, otherwise he'll be worried that you've been hurt), and these mop up the blood like a bandage.
