It was a stingray that got him, but I must admit to being saddened by the news...He was a mad but clever b*gger and did loads for Austrailian wildlife preservation, a sad loss, especially for his wife and children :o[

Hey silver, there's a thread on news as well. Feel so sorry for his family. It was actually a stingray that killed him. Such sad news to hear.
I can't pretend I liked him, too loud for me, but of course this is a horrible thing to have happened. So sad for his wife and young children.
i'm actually surprised that he lived that long, he was as mad as a hatter, but i liked watching him too, my heart goes out to his wife and them beautifukl kids of his.
this has shocked me very much as in all those crazy things he did, he dis hilst diving! And people wonder why I am so worried about diving! Sorry divegirl!
....admitedly Diving can be an extreme sport, but in 5 yours of diving the worst danger I've come across is is an incompetant buddy...usually me....lol Stingrays are not by nature aggressive animals and I would say that it was pure and extreme bad luck that caused his death.

Now crossing the road....there's an extreme sport!!!!!

*years*
I have heard of far too many fatal and tragic occurrences over the years divegirl, they don't always make headline news or get turned into a film, usually, as you say, it is the incompetent buddy that either dies or gets you killed. It is worrying that so many holiday makers decide to give it a go and abroard you just cannot trust the equipment or the skill of the local dive teams.
I have to say I'm sorry he died, however he treated wildlife as a form of entertainment rather than with the respect it deserved and I found his methods to be intrusive to the wildlife he studied, as did many other people who levelled critisism a him for this, plus that stupid stunt with his newborn really ticked me off, so I didn't really rate him as a serious naturalist. Sorry that he died though, but I'll almost bet my bottom dollar that he was cornering, poking and prodding at the thing that killed him whilst it was trying to avoid him like the plague.
i agree i didnt find his programmes entertaining at all , but a pity to die in such an awful way.
Totally agree Dot, I gained my PADI and subsequent qualifications here in the good old UK and it's relatively freezing temperatures, and I do worry about people and their qualifications when they are completed in warm waters in 3 days.... Diving is all down to experience, and though I hate to admit it, even after 5 years I would still not call myself a tottally competant diver[or speller....lol]. On the other hand, diving is a phenomenal experience to undertake and I would recommend it to anyone under the right supervision...... not like my last dive! Take me + a mad russian + a Puffer fish.... Sacre bleu!!! lol

should say....5 years and 79 dives....
Poor guy! I must admit I am shocked it didn't happen sooner... given how daring he was with the animals but still its very sad news. I do feel for his wife and children. He is a bit of a legend!

Its national Wacko day at my bus stop and some looney woman was telling me Steve Irming had died!!!!! Get it right love!
it is terribly tragic i thought he was great and me kids love him but realisticly he probably would nt have wanted it any other way
see ya steve top bloke :~)
Its very saddening but the thing thats saddened me more today is I've already got a joke e-mail about it, where someone has already gone to the trouble of doing a joke picture. Sick people out there and even sicker to pass it on.
i like a joke 4getmenot but i cant stand those sort of things. they are in very bad taste seeing as 2 very young children have lost their daddy. I hope i dont get any but no doubt, i will. It is very sad news and he did so much for wildlife conservation. A top bloke with a real understanding of animals and total respect for them too.
have you been ironing in capenwray divegirl /

My son says if he was being filmed at the time to watch out there are no video nasties doing the rounds, sadly my son may have apoint.
