She became a novitiate when she was 18 or so and took solemn vows when she was in her early 20's. These were vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. Everything she owns or earns belongs to her order and she gives up all her wordly goods, chastity is self ex, and obedience refers to obedience to God and her superiors and to remain unmarried.
As far as I know, a woman who has been married may become a nun and when taking the vows follows that life thereafter. She will probably take simple vows though, but each order is different. Compared to some, my aunt is a party animal!!

I attended a boarding school with nunns as a child and one of them slept in a cubicle at the end of our dorm with us. We were always curious as to what she wore and - much to our disgrace and amusement :) - one night we crept under our beds to see if we could identify what she wore going to bed. Because we each had one of these wooden cubicle with just a single bed and a small bedside chest, the woodwork meant that we could only see about a foot up her leg. So, going by what we were able to see, at that time nunns wore long plain, white cotton nighties. I am now in my 50s and only a few years ago visited this same nunn again. She is now in her 80s and no longer wears the long black dress and long habit and she used to. Everything has been modernised and she now wears a black knee length skirt, white blouse and black vest during the day. Unlike when I was a child and the nunns private rooms or spaces were hidden away from everyone, she actually invited me into her lovely room, filled with cards from former students and beautiful hand crafts she herself had made. In the corner beside her bed was a nice flowery dressing gown and a flowery nightdress ... the woman we all feared and who rarely looked or behaved in a friendly manner towards us now is a gentle, happy, smiley person who feels free again, even though she still is living in her convent.
My older sister Mary, age 45, has been a nun for 13 years. (And yes, her name is indeed Sister Mary.) She's in the U.S., in an order called the Cenacle - currently based outside of Chicago. (Her order is based in France, founded in the early 1800s by St. Therese Couderc.)
Mary's one of the few nuns in her order under age 60. She prefers a nice cotton T-shirt for bedtime, and says many in her community do the same. She sports a number of vintage rock band shirts from the 1960s and '70s. She says she likes the updraft.
Mary's order is charismatic - lots of singing and dancing - and specializes in spiritual counseling/retreats for addicts and battered women. All her "ladies", regardless of age, have in common a supreme taste for fun and, despite the fact they wear civvies, play up the nun card whenever it will work in their favor.
Although she did take the vows of poverty (earns about $40/week), chastity and obedience, she is allowed to accept cash and prizes for her birthday and Christmas. And, of course, whenever she visits (gets a month's vacation every year), we pick up the tab for everything.
