The risk of transmission of an STD via oral sex is still there, but it is less than with penetrative sex.

Herpes is the biggy. you can get through oral sex. Even if he had no signs of it, it could be there.
You are at more risk of getting oral thrush, gonororrhea, or HIV/AIDS through oral sex then other STIs. Although I think syphilis, chlamydia, and warts are all contractable through it.
You need to look out for signs such as cold sores, sore throats or tonsilitis. Although most oral STIs dont show any symptoms, so if you find out the guy were with had one get it checked out,.

The risk is the same and you don't have to swallow to contract the diseases. You should probably read up on sti's before you continue to have unprotected sex.
