I've stopped smoking !
12 Answers
It has now been over 24 hours since I last smoked anything at all, and I feel lousy ! I've run out of all supplies - baccy, weed, you name it and I've not got it. How in God's name are you supposed to cope ?
Everything stinks - quite literally ! - but I've still got a ravenous appetite. I'm back to four suqare meals a day and reckon I probably put on a stone yesterday.
My hay-fever has gone manic ! My skin is itchy with eczma and I feel slightly sick most of the time. Worst of all, I can hardly breathe !
So, all you people out there who think there is something clever about not smoking - - - how the hell do you cope ?

Stick with it, it will be worth it in the end.
Try occupying your mind on other things, as soon as you start to think about smoking do something - anything - even wash your hands and brush your teeth.
Well done for taking the first step.

Try Nicorette gum and when the craving is unbearable (been there) just chew for 30 seconds and then take the gum out, keep it on a saucer, 15 minutes later when you'd kill for a ciggy, chew it again. This is the way I did it, I know it's not what it says on the box, but it worked for me.

Congratulations - they say that the first 24 is the hardest.
I have never smoked, my mother died at age 58 due to emphysema due to smoking and my dad died two years ago from a heart attack caused by smoking, the death certificate actually said that. My dad was 76, but for the previous 25+ years had circulation problems in his legs due to furred up arteries.
I am not in a position to lecture though - I weigh 18 stone and at 5 foot 4 this is too much.
My drug of choice is Pepsi Max.

Get a bike and you can smoke all you want, guilt free! By cycling to work, I've never felt fitter and I'm not polluting the atmosphere with a car or by taking the bus because all the carbon that I blow out from ciggies came from the atmosphere in the first place. Being Scottish I don't need to feel like a social leper either, it just means we get a change of scenery every now and again when we're eating/ drinking out. The other good thing is that if I cycle in the morning and cough up lots of stuff I'm less inclined to smoke for a good few hours so I smoke less but enjoy them all the same when I do. Don't listen to the anti-smoking lobbyists, you only live once! (Of course if and when I procreate I will probably stop for the benefit of the kids)
let's face it - we are all going to die at the end.
Why be extra miserable until then by giving up everything that is bad for us.
Life is stressful enough.
barniclebill - better watch out, cycling is meant to be bad for your 'goolies', and then procreation may not be an option.
Susan - who is sitting guzzling caffeine high Pepsi max.

Thanks for the support - but it really is driving me insane. I just feel so damn lousy and I can't stop eating ! I would have liked to have had the assisstance of nicorette gum or patches or something, but its just too expensive ! Its a shame that with all the money thats wasted on anti-smoking advertising just a little cannot be put into helping people stop, but instead it just seems to be a profiteering racket ! I did ask at the doctor's and apparently you can get them things on prescription - but a prescription costs almost as much as two packs of smokes. Its a crap deal either way. You're treated like public enemy number one if you do smoke but get no really effective help to stop.
I do usually cycle quite a bit but don't feel well enough to do so today ! Now, where's the biscuits ?

Hi kepla..I tried to stop last year...lasted 3 months but quite easy..then unfortunately started again when I went on holiday. If you get the prescriptions from your local stop smoking groups..ask the doctor..the prescription is for a month which in my case was worth 140 (20 a day)
The irony of it was I dragged my step mum with me who had smoked over 40 years...she used the gum as she was allergic to patches and she is still stopped a year later.
I'm going to try again..it's quite useful if you go to the groups..everyone is in the same boat and at different stages so you get really useful first hand hints and tips.Good luck.

Well, it has now been 30 months since I quit smoking so I thought I'd post back with a 'progress report'.
Quitting smoking has basically changed my life. My weight has ballooned and I now find it more difficult to exercise. I get out of breath very quickly, as I now suffer from allergic asthma as well as hay-fever.
I still miss the enjoyment of smoking, but the smell of tobacco now makes me feel very ill, as do most strong smells, and as a result I'm pretty bad tempered and irritable most of the time.
Basically, instead of just chilling out for a few minutes several times a day, having a nice relaxing smoke, I just find the world more irritating and difficult to cope with.
I would suggest that eerybody else should have to quit smoking too as I don't see why I should be the only miserable one.
On the plus side, I'm not spending any money on smoking - but then the only reason I gave up was beause I couldn't afford to continue to smoke.
The prospect of living longer is just prolonging the torture !
