Negative smear test result
13 Answers
Hi guys,
My sister has had her smear test results back and they say that she has severe pre-cancerous cells. She has to go for a colposcopy in a couple of weeks to find out what action needs to be taken.
I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this and if so what has been the outcome. She's only 27 so obviously this was quite a shock and as she was trying for another baby, it has blown it all out the window! We obviously know the important word here is pre and that nothing has or will develop. Thanks in advance for any answers xx

My best mate recently had exactly the same thing. She was naturally worried, but as you say the emphasis is on the word 'pre'.
She had to go back to the gynaecologist a few times and each time I think (I say 'think' as I'm not 100% exactly what the procedure entailed) they burned away a layer of the cells (it's not as gruesome as it sounds).
She's completely clear of them now, but has to have smears a lot more often than you would usually.
I'm sure your sis will be fine, hun, but mail me if you want and I'll see if I can get you some more info. xxxx

Thanks for that babes!! That really helped. It's nice to know she's not alone!! It's just such a worrying term to come across. Although at least my side of the family focused on the pre bit. Her mother in law phoned round a few of her family telling them she has severe cervical cancer!! They all thought she was on her way out!! Thanks again hun xxx
Aww, bless her, poor thing!

Hi! I was in this situation a few years ago, and I had to have a "loop diathermy" to remove the cells. It took about 15 minutes under local anasthetic, and the actual procedure didn't hurt at all. I had a period pain type ache for about 24 hours afterwards and took the next day off work to stay in bed and moan about it, although I could actually have gone in if I'd absolutely had to. I had a sort of discharge for about a week - 10 days after, and a heavier than usual period that time, but after that I was back to normal. I had to go for smear every 6 months for 2 years, and now I go for one every 12 months.
The other thing is that you are not supposed to do any strenuous exercise / lift heavy weights for about a week after the procedure, but I had mine done on the Monday, and I was at work putting up solid metal fence panels on the Friday with no ill effects.
Please tell your sister to try not to worry too much, the procedure seems to be pretty effective and :touching wood: I've hqad clear smear tests ever since.

I remember having the last check when he was 3 months old, on my hubbies lap next to me as we watched the monitor! How funny now\!!

I was about 25 when I had pre-cancerous cells (twenty years ago or so). I had a cone biopsy, which involved being in hospital for a couple of days. Everything has been fine since, though I had to have yearly smear tests for a number of years. I have since had two kids and am now back on normal smear tests.
i had the same thing loobie when i was 25 and i still have to go for 6 monthly smears which is a bit poo!! the colposcopy was a bit uncomfortable but i had george clooney staring down at me so it wasnt all bad!! i couldnt watch the screen...i'm a bit squemish when it comes to things like that!!
