Eight Body Language Skills
1. Facial Expressions.
You vary your expression to fit changes in the emotions expressed.
Blank faces: (Under use of facial expressions.) May be seen as showing hostility or lack of interest.
When you are speaking, failure to use adequate facial expressions can also convey lack of interest in both the subject and/or the person.
Weak expressions that fade in and out quickly can suggest insincerity.
2. Eye contact. In a conversation:
Look more while listening, less while talking.
Look away while taking up the conversation. Look back while handing it back.
When conveying warmth, add a lot of looking to smiling.
Staring hard or to an extreme at someone suggests hostility or over intrusiveness.
3. Distance. Keep an appropriate distance, or adjust for other intimacy cues to compensate when you're too close or too far away.
4. Touch. A brief touch on the shoulder or other conventionally accepted area of a person's body can convey support, or it can be used to guide someone, or to draw their attention to an important point.
Outside of the shoulder is the least intimate part of a person.
Sudden and uninvited touching, especially of a conventionally unacceptable part of another's body, is too intimate.
Too many touches to control direction can make you seem domineering.
5. Use of voice. Aim for a moderate volume in most cases. Use a resonant tone, even and a bit low, but still comfortable. Vary the pitch and pace accordingly.
