I always have an antihistamine cream and a spray of Autan Bite Ease. I find the problem is that they tend to go septic after scratching. Tea tree oil/cream is also useful as an antiseptic.
It is a good idea to see if you need the antibotics.
Made me paranoid about getting bitten.

Hi electric I have allergies to horsefly bites, but then they are carrying such nasty germs it is expected, take people's advice about the creams and antihystemine tablets, Piriton is amazing but does make you drowsy, it may ease the itching but anything localised is quicker. Do not be tempted to pick at the actual bite, the fluid build up that causes the swelling will make your skin look like cellulite and you will be tempted to try to squeeze it to get the badness out but that can cause infection and so let it take it's course.
We were on a cruise once ( A very well known one ) and they had flowers outside the cabins ready to deliver. I walked past and must have been bitten on the ankle. Obviously it wasn't a horse fly but my ankle swelled up and itched just like yours. I had to go and see the ship doctor and have a steroid injection and antihistamine tablets. Go to see your doctor.
Hi electricblue, The same thing happened to me when we had the hot weather back in June/July, my ankle was bitten and I ended up going to the doctors because it swelled up so much I couldn't walk on it with the pain it was causing me and my bite went into a blister "yuk". The doctor gave me Anti-Biotics and Antihistamine I also was putting Eurax cream on for the itching, my ankle went down after 4 days but I still have the mark where the litter blighter bit me.
Hope you feel better so as I can really sympathize with you, "get well soon" X X X :-)

hey electric blue ! I recommend loratadine antihistamines you can get them in asda boots or tescos and they are only about a pound- cheaper and more effective than piriton. And anthisan cream which is also an antihistamine or tiger balm to take the sting away. Maybe nip to the docs if it doesnt get better x
