what are freckles and why do we get them an how do we get rid of them?

Freckles (ephelides) are small brownish spots mainly found on the upper body especially the face. They are genetic. The gene for freckles is closely related to that for blonde or red hair and fair skin. They will generally multiply and darken in the sun and then fade in winter. You can't get rid of them but you can minimise them by keeping out of the sun or using a strong sunscreen.

About freckles................ I am now 33 and the majority have severely lessened - I hated mine. Firstly, before a holiday (abroad) I always use Gatineux 'Tan Excelerator.' This is an absolutely brilliant product which gets your skin use to the sun and it also stops you burning (provided you of course use sun lotion whilst in the sun for a period of time) and stops my frecks coming out. It costs around twenty quid but gets you a tan so quickly and prevents freckles (the dot-to-dot type). Also, I have found by trial and error due to getting prickly heat, that Boots own brand stops the frecks really coming out. But I also think it is due to my age. They have certainly decreased and it could be due to the fact that you play out a lot when younger. I have also heard that fresh cut lemon squeezed on the face 'burns out' freckles and did try this, but be sensible and only do this for about 5 mins before applying sun screen. Also, just whilst on the subject of sun screen - I found out a fact which I never knew. If you burn in the sun, applying or reapplying sun screen DOES NOT STOP YOU BURNING FURTHER. I thought it prevented burning full stop - so be careful.

Axel, Wanted to make another point - when I use to use sunbeds for two weeks every year (to get skin use to sun to prevent prickly heat), my whole face would be covered in freckles. These 'sunbed' freckles also remained with me for the whole year UNTIL I stopped going on them full stop. Although they are very unhealthy, I thought they would give me a good base tan but actually PREVENT a really good tan in natural sun and make my tan fade v. quickly- well they do on my skin anyway. So this could have also lessened the amount of freckles having not been on one since 1997. Nona, I have just rang Gatineau and ordered my 'offer' as described above. They didn't ask if I was a regular customer or anything, so I think offer may be open to everyone. �22. total (including packaging).

Apply parsley juice mixed with equal amounts of lemon juice, orange juice, and red currant juice under your favorite cream will help you keep your freckles invisible.
