I've just been diagnosed with acid reflux/GERD and I need to induce some burps. One of the symptoms is a severe buildup of pressure in the chest just after eating - it feels like a log jam in there. Burps help release the pressure, but they're just not happening often enough.

My brothers could always belch and burp on command and whim, but I never mastered the craft. Can anyone offer techniques or tricks to start the show? (I promise to release the hounds indoors.) TIA

Fizzy drinks help willa...especially lemonade/7 UP/Sprite...
it is quite good to drink if your feeling slight nausea, also...

I sympathise with you, as a friend has this and there are a lot of foods she cannot eat because of it...
Be careful with fizzy drinks. if you are unable to burp then it may only add to the pressure. You will notice that despite a few burps the real release of pressure is when you hear a few gurgles in your stomach to indicate that the food is passing from the stomach to the intestines. Drink more water and always do the following

1. eat slowly and dont gulp air when eating
2. If you have had constipation in the past day...eat less.
3. Always have lettuce handy. eat more of it as it helps with indigestion and acidity.
4. Dont drink beer/alcohol if you think you have had excess gas or acidity/constipation in the past 24 hrs.
5. eat more youghurt (with live cultures)
try baby gripe water, it,ll do the trick
I had this for about 6 months and it was agony! I tried giving up loads of different foods, and drinking fizzy stuff to try and relieve it - nothing worked - except changing my life. Stress is the biggest aggravator of this condition, so it may take more than a can of pop to get rid of it. Lots of love - Amara xx
In the UK it is known as gOrd
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)

The Yanks have an irrational aversion to dipthongs and call it
Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Try 'Windeze'.... it gets it out one way or the other and can be bought in chewable tablets or capsules that you swallow. They are quite good. Drink alkaline drinks like milk, pineapple juice or cranberry juice. Try not to eat or drink acidy things.
Herbal remedies are the best things for this. I saw a hypnotherapist when I had it and she gave me some pills that were just things like 'Magnesium' and things like that. All natural and all helpful.

BTW - I can't burp either which was a problem when I needed too... but I take in a huge breath of air through my mouth, then sit up so it kind of crushes my belly and then its just comes out! Lol
I suffer form the same thing and find Gaviscon great for it. give it a try. Brendax
try drinking a glass of really cold soda water.
Colpermin is a peppermint capsule, available in chemists and great for trapped wind - never travel without it. Worth giving it a go.

Thank you, everyone, for these great ideas. I appreciate all the thought you put into your suggestions. I'm making a list and will try a number of them.

This condition kind of sprang out of nowhere - docs actually thought it was my heart first (I also got palpitations and dizzyness), and I spent all last Wednesday in the ER on a heart monitor and checking cardiac enzymes. My gastroenterologist prescribed Prevacid (a proton pump inhibitor), which I understand can take up to 8 weeks for full effect. I always thought GERD/GORD was a stomach thing, but this seems centered in the upper G.I.

I knew this would be a great crowd to query. So if you read any news about a new toxic cloud over New Jersey, you'll know you've helped!
