Not sure what was wrong with him the first time round but he was supposed to be out last weekend but got an infection and had to have surgery to cut it out.

As i said at weekend sis, dont feel bad, he decided to stop being a close friend long before he was ill so dont in any way feel guilty. I know it must be awful for him but he has a lot of new 'friends' around him and to visit him now

No 4forgetmenot you still don't have to feel guilty, it sounds like you've given him more than enough chances. In life you find some friends come and go as circumstances change... and some stay friends whatever the circumstances, these ones are called 'True Friends' lol!
I had one supposed 'best' friend at school and now we don't even say hello if we meet in the street, and I don't lose any sleep over it.
