I'd be loathe to give him any medication which hasn't been given or ok'd by a vets. Human medicine is very different and he may have underlying conditions and sensitivities you may not know about.

Is there a pet store near you you could ring or go to and ask for advice or an out of hours vet service, it is such a common problem they may be able to help.

Or do you have a basement or somewhere quiet you could make a cosy space for him where he can't hear the fireworks?
You could try here as they have an out of hours helpline.

I would never give him medication if I had not sought advice, I was just wondering if there was any vets on board to give me advice, I have just put him in the spare bedroom with the radio full blast and the curtains drawn that seems to be doing the trick, luckily for me the neighbours have gone out, Thanks anyway Jenna for your help
Apparantly there is a helpline run by Naturallypaws.com, qualified holistic vets, registered with The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

The (UK) premium rate line is open on Monday evenings between 19.30 hrs and 22.00 hrs (7.30pm 10.pm).

At 1.50 a minute Naturallypaws.com is donating 4p per minute on every call to support Thornberry Animals Sanctuary.
It would have been better if you had visited the vets before bonfire night honey, so you were prepared for the fireworks....

yes I know that it was really bad of me,but I am glad to say he is alright now he has settled down with the music
A Bach Recue Remedy can be given to animal's smiffy. For anxiety and fright it would be " Cherry Flower Essence". Just 1-2 drops in your pet's water will calm him down safely. You can Google it to read up on it.

thanks for that Daisy will look it up right now
Was just about to recommend a Bach flower remedy - nice to see someone get there first! You could alway try their Rescue Remedy too : )
Rescue remedy is marvellous for bonfire night.. We have been giving it to our animals for years when they get scared and it really calms them down nicely without any ill effects
I used to use tablets called Serenium, which I got from a very good pet shop here. They worked a treat on my Irish Setter at the time. This is a natural remedy, no chemicals, no side effects. The pack cost about 5-6 at the time, but that was about 7 years ago. Don't need it with my little Shih-Tzu, as he isn't at all upset by the fireworks going on around us. :o)
I have a big Labrador and he was getting distressed practilly trying to sit on my lap.I turned tv up louder and this drowned out the noise of the bangers a bit .Did tell my neighbour why my tv was loud though. Was glad when they finished as I had 3 pubs around me letting them off and I felt I needed a headache tablet but at least it kept my dog calm.
