Well I'm not so sure it's used for this any more as I think it's a lot thinner, but in the past when it was thicker I'm pretty sure body hair was like fur. Basically used to aid regulating the body temperature and to keep us warm.

If you want a more detailed explanation I'd pop this question in to Science..... They'd definately know all the ins and outs in there.
and also to absorb sweat. think about where your hariest bits are!!!
And to nest your natural smells...pheromones :o)
Didn't we come from apes?
To assist with the cooling/sweat process
I was always taught that body hair was to protect certain areas.
