on November 12th 1918 the day after the guns fell silent, a British Army patrol was in what had been German territory throughout the war, when they came across a military cemetry, which contained the well kept graves of German, French and British soldiers. In the middle of the cemetry they discovered a monument with the words "Our brave fallen comrades"

i think you guys are taking this out of context..
its not intended as a debate about whats right or wrong. good or bad ! its about showing respect to the people that fought and died for their country.
if you have no respect for a foreign army, dont remember them... cant be any easier than that can it ??
john has just given us something to think about and remember if we choose to.
Very magnaimous to remember our enemies and all that in theory, but I too have trouble to be honest shedding tears over certain groups (Nazi's spring to mind) and also what consitutes a soldier as opposed to a terrorist or a freedom fighter or an insurgent? Is it just the uniform? I think nice idea though it is, you are on sticky ground once you try to be all encompassing of the fallen in war. I have infinate sympathy for anyone whose been lost in a bloody conflict, I have no sympathy for soldiers responsible for the deaths of Jews in the holocaust. Just because you were unlucky enough to be killed in warfare does not mean you are a good man.We should remember those who fell fighting a better world (on any side) but not just soldiers randomly imho, and there is no disrespect intended there at all.I believe we should remember people's gifts to us,but at the same time not be blind to the difference between a 16 year old lad who thought he was saving his family by fighting in the trenches and a psychopath who enjoyed inflincting death and misery on people. They are not the same thing and they should not be honoured equally.
Wardy + Noxlumos, I dont think john was saying we should glorify war,
Ward~Minter, I think those women + children were there not through choice, rather because they had an AK47 opinted at their heads
Noxlonus, I agree on your point about one mans terrorist is anothers freedom fighter , however we are missing the point and I think john is saying that the only people who glorify war are those who dont have to fight in one.

I observed a very poignant 2 minute silence.
I was in the middle of Primark in Manchester City Centre, they were great, made a number of announcements leading up to it then for the start of the silence.
The whole store (and believe me it's packed and mad on a weekend in there) fell still and silent and you could hear the main shopping street fall silent and trams stop and such. Being surrounded by so many people made things seem so much more real, human cost and such.
