Someone told me today that you can have up to 10lb in weight of waste matter in your bowel at any given time. Is there a healthy way of getting rid of this without the need for an enema?

You would have to eat a permanent healthy diet to not get this build up. I'm talking fibre, as much raw fruit/veg as you can handle, seeds/nuts, loads of water etc. If your body can't digest the nutrients from your food then that's how it ends up I'm afraid.
Why do you want to get rid of it ? It's perfectly normal, let nature take care of itself.

If you are getting uptight about it, eat more beans, chilli, sprouts. It won't get rid of the excess, but it will seem like you are making the effort (although in the case of chilli there is no straining involved)
Vent it in B&S.... I think a lot of people do. ;0)

I'm kidding... kinda! Lol!
Actually it's not perfectly normal in the strictest sense of the word as indigenous peoples generally have a bowel movement within a couple of hours of eating and have a comparatively empty bowel most of the time, whereas it's all the crap we eat that stays in our systems and causes this "back up" if you like.
My wife's family suffer from HNPCC ( an heriditary form of bowel cancer) so she regularly has to have colonoscopies which prior to she drinks something to empty her bowels. Afterwards, once her bowels are totally empty, she can, if she eats correctly, replicate this more natural process of digestion as long as she avoids processed foods etc, so the consultant that told her about it is obviously perfectly correct.
Your bowels do well being as empty as possible, as our lack of excercise and bad diet and this build up you speak of is a major cause of non-hereditary colon cancers as well. Drink loads of water and follow Champagne's advice.
Why not look into colonic irrigation?

Hey.... we're all full of it sometimes. Some more often than others. ( politicians)
Seriouslly though, If there is a problem you will become aware of it . And, NO , healthy people don't have empty intestine. If peristalsis were that fast we wouldn't want to leave the house. Ten pounds is excessive but as long as your train makes daily deliveries , you will be fine.

well working at a nursing home taking care of patients,i had two patients puke up poop because they couldn't poop it out.Its very dangerous to not poop. One of them died.See doctor he will give you some medications to help....and lots of prunes and prune juice.Milk of magnisium will help too.At well i rather have enema then puke it out.

I dont actually have any problem with my bowels at all! It was just I was amazed that we go around with that much inside of us thats all, would be nice to have a clear out and feel better.
arrgghh, that is a bit alarmist !

Your patients must surely have had a pathological intestinal obstruction which no amount of prunes or magnesia would help.
well if they were in the right state of mind they would of been better. But yes there are a few that no matter what you do you will always have trouble with it.Most of my patients had dementia.I worked on the lock down unit. That's a good thing liquidspace.I am glad that you don't have to suffer like that.
