A. The most common symptom, found in about half of all cases, is blood in the urine. However, only a minority of people with this symptom actually have cancer. In most cases it is caused by a kidney infection or kidney stones. Another quite common symptom is pain in the lower back or a swelling in the kidney area. Fatigue, weight loss, anaemia and sweating, which are the symptoms for many types of cancer, have also been reported.
Doesn't mention hard lump on back though -just swelling.

Right... I've actually got an Oncologist sitting next to me (seriously).... And I'm sorry to say there's no way to tell from your description or especially online... it could be a form of cancer, (you would not get cancer of the back but you could get cancer on an area of the back). Equally it could be a cyst.
You have to get yourself down to the GP's. Only way to be sure.
Good luck and keep us updated.

gsxr, please don't be frightened. This may not be anything terribly serious. The main thing is to make sure your GP gets a good look at it and if necessary sends you for tests asap! The "asap" is very important! It might be a benign tumor or a cyst or something else. Nobody on here will be able to tell you what it is. When your doctor has done whatever tests are necessary, if it does turn out to be a form of cancer, please do not panic! I had bone cancer which spread throughout my body to other tissues. I survived and have now been cancer free for over 16 years! The main thing is not to presume anything, but to see your doctor and have it checked, then to take whatever action is required as soon as is possible. I wish you well with this. Hopefully this will not be too serious a thing. Please let us know how you get on. Best wishes xx :o)

Cancer is a very scary word but is also treatable if you catch it. So more scary is the thought of you sitting there worrying. I'm really glad you made an appointment with the doctors, please keep us updated.
If you need more information then ask another question. I'm not an expert but I know a few people who are. And I'm sure there are people in B&S who know way more than me on the subject. Good luck, I hope it all works out and it's just a cyst. xx
