they are not that easy to get hold of !!!!!!!!!
i just need to know how serious it could be , or if there is a simple solution.
sometimes old boilers are loud and clunky, sometimes broken boilers are too.
Get the water pump checked. Its a round shape normally and situated very near to the boiler on one of the upper pipes at the top of the boiler.
I know what you mean "silverdaler". When I first moved into my present house the boiler decided to kick-in at 1:00am and the whole family converged on the landing screaming,"What the hell (or something like that) is making that noise?" I thought either the house was possessed or some squatter was playing the drums badly in our attic. We've since had a new boiler put in and the whole system checked and although you may not need a new boiler it's a good idea to get it looked at.
Mine did this a couple of weeks ago and it was because i had no pressure. Have a look at the dial that looks like a speedometer type thing starting a zero. It should have a red pointer at where the pressure is. if it is at zero or near it then just turn the boiler off. You will need to get it refilled (or whatever they do)
Have you tried bleeding radiators, get water hot before you do as this can cause pipes to bang and clunk

thankyou all
Hmmm, maybe its one of them insects that escaped from that government research center i heard about the other day. Apparently they escaped in some womans hair. They crawl off clothes in the washing machine, into the pipes. They then make their way to the boiler and lay their eggs. When these are laid, they grow to fairly big insects, with really hard claws. Once they grow so big, they try to get out. They are supposed to be harmless unless they get to bread. But you may not live anywhere near where it happened...

Mr Ben, you really must take more water with it hun !!!!!!!!
Not a good sign, silver. Think it probably is going to explode, unfortunately.. There is, however, something I recall about boilers making clanking banging noises and the pipes needing a 'soft tap' - any plumbers on here should know what I mean.... There are quite a lot of diy/ plumbing q & a sites on the internet with general info that might help you get more of an idea... Good luck.
