Asperger Syndrome

Not a question, this is for Zorro. To determine if a person has this condition he/she needs to be assessed by a physcologist over a 6 week period following a referral from a gp or school if the person is of school age. The assessment will show up if the person had A/S and if so,is high, medium or low functioning. Nobody can self diagnose as certain test's need to be undertaken. My son is High Functioning, thank God. If you're concerned Zorro see you gp and ask for an assessment. I'll overlook your foul remark's to me from last night.

..and surely as long as Zorro is happy with his self diagnosis what's the problem ~ at least he recognises his problems/difficulties and is learning to live with them.
It is often the case that adult aspies are not officially diagnosed ~ my mother in law for one. She recognises the difficulty in getting the diagnosis, doesn't want to ''waste the NHS coffers'' and at her time of life just can't be bothered with the long wait for diagnosis.

Basically she is just like my daughter ~ in fact I hang my head in shame and will say that it was me who mentioned to my mother in law that she was displaying classic aspergers traits.
Whether she has it or not I will never know, obviously because she doesn't want to be assessed! before my daughter started displaying symptoms (if I am honest I would say she was about 2 and a half) I thought my mother in law was incredibly odd ~ she displayed it all including preferring her own company, disliking crowds, noise, her strange eating habits, tics, and disliking human contact.

Ahh ,I understand now Pippa, With you having an "Aspie" daughter then yes, you would recognise certain things regarding your MIL. I can see what she means now by not wanting to be assessed at her age. Seem's she's managed well over the years, marrying and bringing up a family etc. Did your daughter ever go to nursery school? My son could'nt as he was in nappy's till the age of 4 and half then he started primary.
Yes, she went to nursery school at 4 years old. She was potty trained by 3 and a half.
Unfortunately she spent most of nursery & primary school sitting in a corner by herself as she didn't like company ~ the teachers left her to it as she was 'no trouble'!!
My daughter has a lovely small group of friends from high school who have all learned to accept her brash manner and her aspie ways..she also has a separate group of friends at college ~ they are all goths, and although she doesn't see them socially out of college they get on well enough to chat at lunchtime :o)
As you can probably guess, my daughter is high functioning which has been a blessing I must admit.

I hate crouds....I have to have a few beers b4 I go to work doos and have to be "invited in" to conversations otherwise I stand there silently. Once invited in I can talk. If I see people I know, or neighbors ahead of me, i slow down hoping they will go into their house so I dont have to say hello...not coz im ignorant or hate them...just its too awkward fotr me. Also have no sense of my own space...will bump into things when there seems loads of space. Sensitive to too many people talking at once, and light, jump out my skin if someone touches me unexpectedly.
Can pull every week somehow, yet mind completely blank in social situations...dunno how i manage it. Am a loner, hard to make friends....mates make the friends and join the group.
Basically every possible trait in minor detaill...I have.
I analyse in minor detail and have ability to visualise peoples expected future actions based on what ive seen of their character...its like watching a video.....so am great at mind games.
Am a bit like that baddy in the new James Bond film when he out does Bond at the poker table.....I can see what people are going to do b4 they can in such situations....coz i analyse things in minor detail....have a bit of robot brain ...only think logiically.
Yet I cant read people socially.
Also I have a face thats difficult for people to read....no emotion usually ..starngers keep telling me to smile.

Thats ok Zorro, Apology accepted thanks. My son never feels aggression,in fact he's too gentle for his own good! We tried to get him to got to karate but when we took him he was scared stiff and saw it as violence not self defence. He goes to an "Aspie" social club every 2 weeks with "Minder's" students training to be psycologists and he's fine there. Looks like you've done your homework but I wish you'd consider having a proper asst as if you're unable to work at least you'd be liable for DLA. My son's 21 and at college, doing well thank God!
Hi all, some of you might already be familiar with this site!
http://www.tonyattwood.com.au/
I have been battling for almost 8 years now for my son to be diagnosed! The last app. we had was 1st November when he had the ADOS test. So its been ten weeks gone wednesday since he was seen and we are still no further forward!? He has been assessed at school, observed at home and been seen by the MAAT clinic, we all know that he has AS and even the specialist Dr agreed with us, as did the speech therapist. The lady who went to see him at school is the one that says that theres nothing wrong with him because he is well behaved? Maybe she hasnt read Tony Attwoods book? My thoughts go to all who are living with this condition and Im sure those who understand maybe would agree with me, that if you dont laugh sometimes you would never stop crying!!!!!

Caz, I obviously did'nt know you had 3 son's with AS. Please dont mind me asking, are they middle or low functioning? Low? My son went to 3 special schools after his assessment. The 1st was a "Further Asst" school for 1 year, then a Special Need's school were he was bullied that much he had to have x ray's on his back so we fought to get him into a Special School fo "Aspie's" phew, what a fight but we succeeded and he came on in leaps and bounds! You must have your hand's full Caz and I admire you. They're our "Special" kids eh?
Im good natured...but get very angry at injustice....apparently a trait...I actually set up this name as a secondary AB name to have a go at the people on here bullying others.
I have done extensive research on the net in to the condition and see myself looking back from the screen.
Its a very lonely condition...women get the wrong impression...think Im a womaniser, coz Im not good at relationships yet I crave to settle down. Its just my lack of social skills and emotion confuse them.
Im good at writing down what Im thinking yet cant speak it. So people on AB probably think Im the biggest charmer ever in real life, yet Im a bit of a Cyborg...(ironically an AB name ive used on here).

Hi loulou, Yes Tony's site is very good, maybe Zorro will take a look? I cant believe you've waited 8 years, thats disgusting! Why dont you write to your MP? Nothing ventured etc. Have you read "Freaks,Geeks and Asperger's" by Luke (forget his last name sorry.) He's an "Aspie" and wrote the book from his point of view. The whole family were on tv last year and Luke's brother's are "Aspies" as well. Good reading fodder!
