Watching Tv in the dark

Is it bad for your eyes watching TV in the dark? I have always been told it is but what is the difference in watching it in the dark at home and watching in the dark at the cinemas?

It gives me migraine, but then that's just me. I think the difference between watching TV in the dark and being at the cinema is that the cinema picture is being reflected off the screen (and isn't as flickery) whereas from the TV the light is more direct, if you see what I mean.... Clear as mud, eh?
Constant focusing of the eye on one focal length isn't good for the eye so having a well lit room allows the eye to flit from place to place and lets the eye move....in a darkened room there is much less for the eye to move to and this causes the "eye strain" that really doesn't exist....similar to staring for hours at a VDU is bad for you.
