narky shop assistants
23 Answers
at a petrol station today i handed my phone card over to be swiped and i omitted to use the word "please" as i was distracted by the sight of the 50 stone woman next to me reaching over to buy 8 bars of chocolate (she will then complain later on in the day about being overweight) the sanctimonious shop assistant said "say please" in the most patronising voice you can imagine i then said "you are not paid to give me elocution lessons dear you are paid to stand there and give me my change" i then left , i have noticed people of this ilk becoming more and more patronising and mouthy have you had any experiences?

Oh! to see your face when she gives you the change in 20p pieces.
Personally, I would have apologised for my manners explaining that I was distracted by the tub of lard blocking out the sun.
Whilst we all feel like correcting people on their ill manners, a shop assistant (unless she is the owner) would normally be expected to ignore it, if you correct every customers bad manners, you could very soon find yourself out of business.

If the assistant said it in a patronising way, personally, I'd have replied: "Oh, I'm sorry, I just got side tracked for a moment - pleeeeease".
Job done, everbody happy!
I don't work in a shop, but have watched the way some customers speak to assistants - no please, thank you, or otherwise - very frustrating!
Mind you, some shop assistants can be rude at times too - the most annoying one is "Excuse me please, do you sell such & such?" - "Nah" says the assistant. Not, "No, I'm sorry we don't" or "No, I'm sorry we dont, but you could try....."
It's just common courtesy to say please, thank you & be polite wherever you go - well it is in my book anyway!

most assistants in service stations have the most appalling display of body language, they feel they are on auto pilot and any hint of behavoural training to offer an open and welcoming message to customers is often sadly lacking.
I suggest in future you recommend they take a course in Customer Sevice incorporating said behavoural presentation in the work place and then you will feel you have helped to improve everyone's day.
If you are open and welcoming and greet with a smile, even you would be disarmed and distracted from your mood Roberto.

It's Little Hitler syndrome Duckster. Give people a little power and a little authority when previously they had none and it turns them crazy.
When you go in there later on why not give her the 20 note and say she can keep the change if she can tell you what antidisestablishmentariounism means? Just a thought.
China Doll
Ps: Early for you?
