Hi,

Just a quickie - what can I buy for a newborn baby?

My cousin & his partner are expecting a little boy next month & I want to buy them a prezzie....I have never met his girlfriend and probably won't see the baby for ages (they live in Portsmouth & I live Newcastle)

I was thinking of clothes, but I think everyone buys them and I don't really know their tastes, but it also needs to be easy enough to post!

Any ideas appreciated, thanks

Premium Bonds...
A good idea is a comforter type of rag doll. My kids both had one called a Kuskie, from Grobag. They dragged them everywhere and stopped them from needing a dummy. They are soft material, loosley shaped like a rag doll. Alternatively a Grobag is a great pressie. It is like a little sleeping bag but has arm holes and is safer than sheets and blankets for babies. They have various tog ratings.
I always buy new babies a set of coins from the year they were born - get these from the royal mint. Always seems to go down well and never duplicated yet!
how about a taggie? they're these new things babies everywhere have them! lol. like a rag thing but with lots or ribbons and textured stuff stitched into them, see here: http://www.taggies.com/cgi-bin/estore/show_ent ry?index=1 my little brother has one that my sister made him, it cost next to nothing and was so easy to make. otherwise, places like boots and mothercare sell their own brand. hope this helps. or towel capes you know the towels with hoods on them. or a pretty quited mat you can put down on the floor which allows the baby to kick about.
Running shoes? ;0P

Sorry Pete... how about getting something for mum? As you say they'll be getting a shed load of baby stuff. Failing that... a voucher for boots is going to have to come in useful surely? Nappies? Baby Oil? Whatever else babies use.... And if mum wants she can spend it on herself then too.

China Doll
I got a mate all the things she couldn't have while she was pregnant - soft cheese, pate, liver, fags, vodka, red bull, champagne!!! Can't remember what else, but I got the list of some website that told you what pregnant ladies should not eat. Sad I know, but she appreciated it!
I always buy some nice photo albums (not special baby one's) you can get some nice one's in boxes Boots, M&S etc do some. I usually write on the card, "Something for you to treasure, and for your mam to show your girlfriends when you're older!" Most of the baby trinkets my kids had have disappeared, or they've thew away at some point as they don't really mean anything to them. The photo albums come out time after time. They do still have their favourite soft toy/comfort also though.
I like snagged's answer, trouble is the minimum investment for premium bonds is 100, so if you aren't thinking of spending quite that much, how about some Mothercare, Boots or M&S Vouchers, then NewMummy and NewDaddy can get NewBaby exactly what they need. Although everyone says that vouchers are boring, I actually prefer getting them, cos then I get to buy EXACTLY what I want ! Plus of course, they are easy to post :)
A present I've bought many times is a baby book to record all those important 'firsts' - first smile, tooth, crawling, walking etc. There's room for photos, usually a little pocket for a lock of hair - it's a gift that has always been very much appreciated.
M & S have got the most gorgeous hooded baby cardigan in cashmere - very very soft. Starts from size 1 month. Comes in plain Blue or blue & cream stripes. It's delicious and 22.
i'm sure the only solution here is to buy something mother and baby get benefit from, i've heard that massage helps a baby sleep and be more calm so a book on massage and some oil suitable for newborn skin it also helps both parents bond with the wee lamb.
