Can anybody help? I'm a 27 year old mother and sat here in tears with earache!! Is it meant to be this bad? I have only got Nurofen for Migraines but i took 2 of those. I have started my anti-biotics but it is getting really bad. My ear is so blocked, i can't hear anything but the blood rushing around my head. I keep putting cotton wool in my ear and it relieves it then it gets painful so i take it out, then it happens the opposite way round. What is going on? Am i just a great big baby? thank you. : (

Hope your son is better now SleepyJ. thank you for your kind words! i will try the hot water bottle. I haven't had earache since I was a kid and my god is it painful!!! : (
You poor thing - my son had this 2 years ago and he was screaming in pain. I felt utterly helpless. In desperation I scoured the net and one old remedy is to soak a piece of cotton wool in warm olive oil then place in ear and then lay on the opposite side so the oil soaks in. Keep repeating as often as you like. My son's pain eased within the hour - although maybe it was coincidence ,but you never know!
I'd go with the 'olive-oil' answer from PF too
remove the cotton wool taking it in and out is just irritating your ear. if possible get some analgesia, make a pouch with some material add some salt heat in the microwave and apply to the outside of your ear, be very careful its not too hot, this does work. good luck
Awwww poor you sair...I agree with Pinky too...whenever I have earache I always use the warm olive oil method...it really helps. I hope it clears up for you.

If earache is making you cry then you need to go to your doctor. If it is constant and does not go away for intervals then it is chronic earache. Are the antibiotics for the ear of for a cold? You need to keep your ear dry firstly

Google - acute otitis media for help
sorry to disagree with you all re the oil, it is a good treatment for ear wax but for an ear infection id not be puting anything into the ear canal, but only my opinion.
A doctor can help ease the pain if the antibiotics are not working. They insert a grimmet into the eardrum to allow air to pass into the middle ear and release pressure and build up.
Grommett not grimmett
hi shannon. gromets are usually used for glue ear especially in children, ive never heard of them being used for an ear infection., surely antibiotics .
I rang my doctor and he agreed with the olive oil treatment. The cotton wool is not shoved into the ear, just very gently placed to stop the oil running out. Please dont push it into the ear hard.
They can be for acute middle ear infections with any form of pus, pressure etc

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. Just the sympathy helps!!!

I have some olive oil so i will try that with a hottie.

The anti-biotics were for a cold. I just can't understand why the migraine nurofens have seemingly done nothing to relieve the pain?

I truly think that earache is one of the worst pains ever, along with toothache. Really hope you feel better soon.xx
Aww! Big hugs, hun. I had a ear infection in both ears on my birthday two years ago. I was up all night crying my eyes out, asking my mum to shoot me.

She called the emergency doctor who said to take 3 paracetemols and 3 ibuprofen (they can be taken together safely), until the doctor's opened.

Hope it's better soon. x
pink. are you saying you phoned your g p to ask advice for an aber on the site ? oh please.
I would have serious doubts about your doctor, if he gives you anti-biotics for a cold!

Oh and Neurofen isn't a very strong painkiller,so won't help much
Sair, My hubby kept having ear infection's and was given antibiotics which cleared things for a couple of months then, last year he was in bad pain again so he went to the doc's who could'nt even get the light into my hubby's ear! Turned out both his ears were packed with tiny abcess's,so more stronger A/biotics. Cleared it up until this month then more abcess's so more a.biots and an antibiotic spray plus an appoinment for the ENT hospital. My hubby says he can the blood rushing in his head. If you'rs does'nt clear up,see you doc again. He was given Co-Dyrodomol and they really helped! Good luck.
Crete, I suspect Pinkfizz means she contacted her GP when her son had earache.
