Is there an evolutionary reason for human pubic hair ? When humans were naked could it be a signal for sexual maturity ? Or simply nature's way of providing for homeless crabs or a palette for Californian actresses to express their individuality ?

I always thought that it was to regulate the temperature of the genitals - could be completely wrong though !!!
It might be the same reason we have hair in our nostrils or on our eyelids. To keep impurities away from our very sensitive genitals. Although I do like your suggestion about pubic hair being a sign of sexual maturity, when Men roamed the earth naked.

And just to add that humans were never naked - our ancestors had a complete covering of bodily hair most of which we no longer have.
I always thought it was the human bodies' way of reducing friction. That is rubbing two bits of skin together causes a rash etc. Hair with its' natural oils reduces this.( See other answers for carpet burns.)
Rinkytink, the testicles are kept at the correct temperature by contraction or relaxation of the skin of the scrotum. When it's cold the testicles are drawn in closer to gain heat from the body, and when warm the skin relaxes and they move further away. Clever stuff eh, I wonder who thought that one up?
Surely its a natural form of dental floss!!!!
