I asked my dentist about this once and he told me that whitening toothpastes were a waste of time and money and to invest, instead, in an electric toothbrush. They'll do a half-decent job at a reasonable price although stubborn stains might take some shifting.
It's important not to brush too hard (although I'm guilty myself), as you will damage your gums. Coffee, Tea and smoking will stain your teeth. I've just had my teeth cleaned at my dentist, where they were blasted with salt crystals, and then polished. It costs about 40, but I've now got lovely pearly white teeth!
Obviously smoking and coffee make them stained. I use Mentadent P and at the age of 33 I have no fillings
Brushing your teeth too hard or too often can corrode enamel, making brown marks. A friend of mine has really rotten looking teeth, because she brushed them *too much*.
