I can understand people being wary if you were being kicked around on the street and people didn't want to get hurt themselves, but if you just encountered someone on their own, injured and distressed, I think you'd have to have a serious look at yourself as a person if you just walked past without trying to help.
I'd charge in like in ER, improvising medical equipment out of biros and sticky tape, save you, plant a kiss on the prettiest girl in the growing crowd, and then walk off with my jacket over my shoulder announcing "I'm not an extraordinary man, I'm just a man doing extraordinary things".

I will say with 100% certanty that I would try and help. As an ex Army Paramedic, I would do my best to give you effective First Aid, even if you were too far gone for me to be any help (and I have been in situations where this has happened so bear with me while I compose myself), I would stay with you until the very end.
No-one should die alone.

champers - you forgot the thumping on the chest with the side of your fist...just as taught at medical school.
DW = i think one of the problems for people is simply not knowing what to do - many people would freeze and do nothing for fear of making things worse - or in this day and age, sued.
the fact that the people who do know first aid have learnt it through choice, says a lot, as many people simply won;t bother to learn it.
if it was taught in schools, people would grow up knowing exactly what to do and have no fear of inadequacy.
its about time schools taught some more useful things.

really whiskey? how long ago?
most people i know were not taught it and to my knowledge it is not part of the curriculum today... hmmm... i'd be glad to hear i am wrong and they have introduced it as a proper class, with regular refresher sessions over the years, and including things from how to phone an ambulance, to how to put on a plaster.
