Nine times out of ten the cause is that you have caught a nerve between the muscles in your neck, sometimes when you trap it, it's quite painfull and can last quite a long time. Keeping it warm helps to relax the muscles thus freeing the trapped nerve or easing the stiffness from your crooked neck.
