And NO remotes.
TV started at 9ish and finished around 12 with the national anthem playing.
Moblie phones only yuppies had them could you do without it now?
Music was on vinyl and tape no Cds/MP3's/Hard drives.
Video was on Tape no dvd's/ Hard drives.
And the Microwave
What use to cheese me off a kid the kettle with the whistle that boiled its head off and blew the whistle off.
Not now
Can i have your thoughts on the above but really how did we cope.

Many thanks Ethel

I do remember going to my grans as a young boy watching my mum doing the washing.
It was a bit of a washing machine upright and two like rolling pins with a handle and the clothes went in between to take the water out and she used to scub them on a board.
Im glad the washing machine got up dated.
When did they stop playing the national anthem on bbc?
when did they stop playing the national anthem on bbc,? I remember my dad would'nt turn the tele off untill it had finished playing
Oh great thread mrknowall......brought back a few memories there!!!
I come from quite a big family so we where one of the first to have a remote control "turn the telly over bez"...if not me one of the others....lol
My mam was still using a mangle up until the early 70's....it was an electric one, then she got a twin tub.....she thought she was in heaven....
If anyone was kissing on the tv mam would say.....now c'mon off to bed.....that was a no no.....lol
I remember watching Bouquet of barbed wire.....and there was a rude scene.....dad couldn't get us out of the lounge quick enough......lol
OH......and the parlour.....we lived in a really big house....but mam had her parlour......none of us where allowed in there....that was for visitors.....

Bloomin eck.......I sound ancient.....lol
The good old days.......:)))
"Moblie phones only yuppies had them could you do without it now?"

Yes. If the 1980s taught me one thing, it's that without exception, every single person who owns a mobile phone is an irredeemable ****** and you all deserve to die.
Brilliant thread mrknowall thank you
In answer to smiffy65's question, they stopped playing the national anthem on BBC1 in 1997 when it started simulcasting News 24 overnight instead of closing down. BBC2 had stopped broadcasting the anthem years before.
thank you Jenstar
It's a bit of strange thing to ask 'how did we cope' when we didn't know these advances in technology existed. Who knows what the future will bring but are we mourning those inventions/advances that we don't yet know about?
We got our first tv in 195l, a small box, naturally in B & W and only BBC 1. It was thrilling but we didn't yearn for another channel. That's what it was and that was more than good enough. Who's to say we are better off these days - you buy something and almost as soon asyou walk out the shop with it, a bigger and better version is produced.
this thread is bringing so many memories back to me, we were not well off in those days far from it but I remember my mam getting us up to go to school, there would be a roaring fire in the kitchen in winter and we had a bowl of porridge and a hot drink before we left for school, then at playtime my mam would be at the playground railings with a flask of either hot chocolate or oxo and some toast to keep us going till dinnertime, then we had our school dinners yummy lol, and we always had a good meal for our tea all fresh stuff none of todays foods that are full of chemicals and e numbers,oh I could go on but I must go to bed at my age I need my sleep lol
what did we do at day/night times. well I worked at the co-op as a machinist making overcoats and funeral coats, I clocked in at 7am had an hour for dinner and clocked off at 6pm,I had my curlers in my hair ready to so that when i got home i had my tea took my curlers out got myself dolled up and either went to the local youth club or the hut as we called it and jived till about 9-30, then it was off home and in bed by ten oclock, these days the kids are getting ready to go out at 10
