Did anyone ever see the episode of 'coupling' when they got caught in the giggle loop and one person set the others off and the more they tried not to giggle the worse it got?

Have you ever been in a situation where you knew that laughing or giggling was really really bad and yet you had to try so hard not to?

yes!! i have this terrible problem with wanting to laugh when i am given bad news or when someone is telling me a serious story. its a nervous thing, i dont think any of what they are telling me is funny... and i know i shouldnt laugh but it always gets the better of me. luckily my friends and family know so dont take it personally!!! its a horrible feeling though, i get totally panicked when someone starts telling me something like that!!

oh Rom, Im like that too, I remember grinning when my parents told me my great uncle had died. i was only young but i recall being told off for it. i was sad but couldnt stop.
Yes! Me and this guy at work got the giggles during the last quarterly staff meeting! One of the directors was speaking and announcing the retirement of a woman who worked here and we just started giggling and couldn't stop! Nothing was particularly funny.. we just couldn't help ourselves! Luckily there was about 60-70 other people in the room so we went quite un-noticed! But me and that guy always get the giggles.. he has had me crying at my desk before.. and just because we get stupid!

I love it though... uncontrolable laughter is one of the best feelings and you can't blame someone for it!
About 12 years ago at my aunts funeral I was obviously upset but I also had the uncontrollable giggles. I put my head in my hands and people just assumed I was crying. Ive always got the giggles when I shouldn't.
Yep. Happens all the time. Especially if I'm with my sister. Doean't matter what the news is, if we catch each others eye then we both start giggling. My Dad came round one day and told us that he'd been to a funeral. The deceased sister had a heart attack at the grave side. I looked up at my sister and we both started giggling, but the more we tried to stop the worse it got. My Dad was sitting there saying 'You fekkin pair of bitches, stop would ya' Which of course made us worse.

Just can't help it !!

ruby, youre right, that sort of laughter is a great tonic for anyone.

I got the giggles at the weekend, it wasnt at a funeral or at news of something tragic but i still felt that i couldnt giggle as the reason for my laughter may have been deeply offended by it
I always used to start laughing when mum had lined us all up to see who'd done it. Coz I knew I shouldnt be laughing it got worse and then mum would always think it was me.

it always was you 4get!!!!!!! at least thats what i told mum :)
Ummmm, your answer has started me off into a laughing fit, sometimes I'm sure people must think I'm drunk as I walk along in fits of laughter.
im giggling to myself now reading all your answers !! ummm, i would have been the same, i was hysterically laughing at my grandads funeral cos my little brother asked why elton john was doing the service - i looked up and the vicar was the double of elton john, i started giggling uncontrollably and just at that point we had to walk in behind the coffin... took all my willpower not to laugh hysterically

its good laughter though!!!
Hi redcrx , this thread has started me off giggling too :-)
I thought I would be able to control a fit of giggles at my age but noooo !!!!!
Last saturday I was giggling , and, as usual about absolutely nothing . :-) x
oh and rude biology lessons, I used to be in stitches. Looking back now though was quite childish. :-)

with everyone admitting to giggling at such moment I shall share my story as i dont feel so bad now.

We went to a wildlife place at weekend where there are tropical birds flying around in rooms. My Mother-in-law kept getting dive bombed by the birds and was getting rather jumpy.

We walked into one area and there was a, rather obvious, transvestite and a woman. The TV was, i have to say, a stereotypical TV the sort of twinset and pearls look. Anyway I already had the start of the giggles but was trying not to catch anyones eye when my fella walked up behind me and my Mother in law and jabbed me in the ribs. he obviously seen the TV so i swung around very quickly to try and stop him saying anything to me because he has a loud voice.

As I turned around i mustve swung my hair into my mother-in-laws hair as the next thing that happened was she shouted 'oh my god, I thought that was a bird' very loudly.

well that was it, I cant think that she couldve chosen anything worse to shout. I was trying so hard not to laugh, she was looking at me strangely and i was trying to keep quiet for fear of upsetting the couple there. The more i thought about it, the more i wanted to laugh, aqd i couldnt look at or talk to anyone for ages :)
The most embarrassing thing is when I am on my own like in a queue at a shop or something and I think of something funny that happened in the morning or the day before etc and it sets me off when I am on my own! And then because I am alone and laughing I find it even funnier! I love it but it does embarrass me! Lol. I tend to do it a lot actually if I think about it... I guess I am just easily amused!
hee hee
that made me laugh!! its an overwhelming feeling isn't it? my friend was telling us about her boyfriend being in a fight, she was dead upset about it and everyone looked so serious, i had to stare at the table in the pub and look thoughtful cos all i wanted to do was laugh my head off
Red! That is hilarious! I am sniggering at my desk! Doesn't help that I am a receptionist!Lol
But seriously.... LMAO
thats a good one :-) I can immagine you in fits of giggles, Like when you and mum had to meditate at that spiritual night :-)
The thing that always gets me and my sis and bro is when we are out and about and see someone who looks a bit.. 'odd'! (I know I am going to hell for this.. but I don't care).. Like there is this lady that lives in our town who is a homeless nutter... and wears mental clothes! And when we see someone like that we always look away or at the ground and say 'Oh... thats embarrassing'... in a very Ricky Gervais kind of way! Gets me everytime! I'm laughing now coz I am remembering the times we have done it!

4get and i went to a spiritualist eve one week. 4get used to go often and i went this one week (she wont invite me again).

I got the giggles at something the woman speaker said and i was sat at back of room (luckily), head in hands, tears running down my face. If i try to hold in a laugh i sometimes snort like a pig. Anyway i made a snorting sound and then heard 4get say to her friend 'shes snorting now' pmsl. I was in pain from trying to hold it in, couldnt see through the tears in my eyes and just wanted to find the exit. it took me about 10 mins to finally stop shaking.
and when my boss fell off his chair I just ran out the room and didnt even ask him if he was ok
