Does anyone know why americans call a fringe in your hair 'bangs'????

I read that it was to do with a menaing for 'bang' which is 'sudden end'..

As the hair comes to a sudden end when you have a fringe...voila!

I also read once that they are called bangs because they are 'bang in the middle' so to speak.
