Does anyone have any evidence to suggest that vegetarian athletes will not perform as well as meat-eating athletes? I would like to settle an argument.

Just do a search in google for "Athlete Vegatarian Diet" to get loads of articles. But an example is here
http://www.veg.ca/newsletr/janfeb97/athlete.html
For those who are too lazy to follow the link, the general feeling is that a vegaterian diet is fine for top athletes, for example Carl Lewis 100, 200, long jump etc Gold medalist is a vegan and has been for years. I think any top athlete would need to be on a strict diet, the fact it does or does not contain meat is pretty irrelavent.
