Why is it some people take heroin?
Im not talking your average junkie who will shoot up in the gutter and lie there until they come round.
Im talking the smart addicts.
Well i say smart but theyre not smart enough not to take them.
Why do they persist ib killing themselves and dont think about their friends and family around them who suffer.

why do they kill themselves and their family without regard?

This is a very serious post.
I hope the ed reads this and for once doesnt just remove it.
This stems from a conversation with someone in the bar i work in.
They are stucjk between a friend who is an addict and the realisation that their friend is killing themselves.
As a barman i listen and try not to judge
But im stepping back and asking for the opinions of the people on ab.
Just looking for a dversity of opinion.
Perhaps from family members who have suffered a similar fate.
Question Author
Btw when i say smart i mean intelligent as in professionals.
Though that seems a contradiction as they are daft enough to take drugs : -(
My best friend is an addict. He, at the moment looks after his family.

From my point of view, I love him, but he's weak.

It's not without regard though. He spends more time thinking about his family than I ever do. The reason being is that he knows that he will potentially hurt them through his own selfishness. I know I won't hurt my parents.

It's wrong what he's doing and it hurts me everyday to see my friend as he is, and yes Legend....he's a smart addict. He goes to work everyday and he pays for his habit. He's never claimed a benefit in his life. But I know him and I can see in his eyes that he's not the man I knew 10/15 years ago.

I will not make excuses for him...or may be I will !!! His issues came at the same time as someone he fell in love with.........someone who already had a habit.

He's my best mate....I love him and I will stand by him.

But....if he starts robbing or lying....I will walk.

Strangely ummmm i do realise that things that happen to you in life do have an effect on you.
To be fair ive had my fair share of grief as have many on ab.
But i like to think i try to get thru without hurting my friends and family.
Though they might disagree with me on that . : - (
He never set out to hurt anyone. He's such a lovely man and that's why it's so hard to watch.

At the moment I still guarantee if I needed him he'd be there for me. My fear is the day he chooses the drugs !!

:-(
Question Author
sadly i think its inevitable that one day , unless he gets clean, that he will totally surrender to the drugs : -(
Im up early today, interesting question,
having been an intro drug user for a few years, as uuummmmm said i did nt go out intentionally to hurt any one my biggest fault was i did nt think about any body else at that time apart from myself. Tried to grab a little bit of sanity (or what i thought was) for myself. It was nt until one day, dont even know why this happened, that i looked into my sons eyes and i saw such sadness, from that day on i have not touched illegal drugs again and i got rid of the addict boyfriend who was not a great help at all as he was the one that introduced me to them.
I was very weak but i have suffered severe depression in the past and truelly i think this is how alot of drug useres become addicts...........no excuses but a little empathy might not go a miss.
I also kept a job down, how im not quite sure, but i have been the victim of burglarys because of the people i was mixing with and to those people......they can rot in hell, there is no excuse for robbing if you cant afford it dont do it.
Any way users are called users for a reason....... because they use people, unintentionally sometimes but never the less it still happens. Im very glad to be out of it all it is hell, not just for the user but for the poor family and friends that have to basically watch their loved ones killing them selves slowly.
And finally legend there is a subtle difference between being smart and having common sense is nt there, unfortunately the two together are quite hard to find.
I would try not to get too involved mate, if it irritates you too much. you ll end up banging your head against a brick wall :(
Hmmm, i know many people who take it. They arent all addicts. You will be surprised if you knew what sort of people take it and what background they come from.
A lot of people take it as a 'recreational drug'.
The reason drugs have so much bad publicity is because of the junkies who steal and mug.
When i was younger i took drugs every weekend when i went out. But that is the only time i did.
I dont think they genuinely mean to kill themselves legend, its just that they get to a state where they dont care...
Despite my stance on drugs, I have and never would take heroin. My cousin abused it, he was a smart, shy boy, had always been very quiet but the heroin bought out his tendancy to sway towards mental illness and he is now a paranoid schizophrenic. It devastated his family for a while, blaming each other for who had the bad blood. It was the 80s though and all the high profile rock bands were doing it and he thought it looked cool and inspirational. No one knew he did it for 4 years from the age of 15 until he got ill.

I have another friend, one of my best friends in fact. She is a mother of two and you would never know she was an addict. She goes through spells of addiction and rehab. When she had a first girl I couldn't even talk to her for not being able to give it up after having children. With pot smoking, cider drinking ways you may think this is a little hypocritical but even she hung around with some right losers that I thought put her little girl in danger. She is attracted to attention. She likes the attention from being an addict and she likes the attention of rehab. Hence why when she is pregnant she has been able to give up very easily as she is getting attention from that.

Anyone I know who has become addicted to smack has had a tough life somewhere. I think thats why these people go for a drug thats a downer and numbing. I had always been more of an upper fan during my teens so I knew I would never fall into it.
I am grateful not to have knowledge of anyone I know being on hard drugs. But we are talking the weak and vulnerable, and once again, the curious. And I dont want that to sound unsympathetic - no one lives their lives without problems. If things are OK in your life, or you can cope, you are unlikely to need the help and escape drugs afford. How many start with the so called 'safe' recreational stuff and graduate on? How many start because they ask themselves, like the boy on the Frank ads - 'what does that feel like?'.

My son has just returned from a break in Amsterdam. I know why he goes (even tho he says he did the museums too this time!). He is very sensible and I absolutely know that he currently controls the smoking and a mild addiction to the horses. But for his own good I wish he didn't smoke (started thru curiosity) as no one knows if life for him will take a dive and then his curiosity for what else is available may well become a need.
Hmmm, rabbitygirl, most people go to Amsterdam for sex, not drugs.
I dont think its just the weak or vulnerable that get involved in drugs, but i agree many start through curiosity.
So, how are the museums in Amsterdam anyway...
may i also say that in amsterdam drugs are not legal , just tollerated..........which brings to mind they understand the dangers but are not so blinkered to keep them underground
Like anything, drugs are only harmful if misused.
A lot of prescription drugs you get from the chemist are more powerful.
I still think its wrong to state that people who take drugs are not smart...
Yes MrBen5 I know ALL of whats on offer over there and as I say he is sensible and also 25 yoa. All I tend to ask my 2 sons is 'everything OK, did you have a good time?' which covers it without embarrassment (probably mine mostly). He volunteered museums which I responded to with a laugh. As long as he doesn't break the law its his business what he does - I do happen to know he loves museums tho. Really!!!!
Curiosity mixed with access to heroin it was for me. I had some good times on it but I didn't get addicted to it and I don't use it any more, mostly because everyone thinks if you use it you must be addicted and I can't be bothered having to defend myself to everyone I meet, and because it costs so much, and there's the health issues, and the people that you have to hang around with to get it who like somebody else mentioned are called users for a reason, and it's through robbery and betrayal from some of these users that I ended up homeless again. I was very weak at that time as I had sustained a head injury and was easily bullied into lending people money that I didn't have as they were very vocal about their rattles and I had a sense that they could have killed me fairly easily as I had a fractured skull and was pretty traumatised after the street robbery in which I got it. Most of the people I met through it were using it as a powerful form of escapism though.
I wasn't aware you can decide not to use heroin anymore Skeecheeboy. Your sad and painful tale also informative and encouraging. Hope that doesn't sound patronising. Was all this long ago and are you now where you want to be?
Heroin is highly addictive one shoot and the person is hooked. A lot of gang wait outside schools and will target the young influencable ones.
Somes youngters start with soft drugs and then progresses . Why because they think it look good or makes them forget about the problem of life or because of the environment they lives in????
Once hooked that is it . they will steal , commit crime and lie for the next fix. Majority of them wants to quit but lost everything and are unable to found the way out. SAD.
I have lived in england and i am amazed how drugs are so accessable .
My brother went missing in the 80s after many years on heroin and was given 1 year to live. eventually he fled our home town because our family was in danger threatned by guns [dealers] and eventually dad paid up. He stole from our family name it he done it.
He started as a drug dealer himself and just selling making lods of cash and became hooked in no time.
He lost his job, lost his son, girlfriend and family for 19 years. We did not know if he was dead or alive.
I have found my brother 4 years ago, well, clean, and working hard. He has got hepatitus c now.
I did ask him why.? his answer was mixing with the wrong crowd, and he was very influencable. He deeply regret his past and knows he can never repair what he has done but can only move forwards.
We should talk more to our children about drugs, knowing that they will try at least something tell them not to do it is wrong feed them with lods of info and to show them as well mini-films of people going through the cold turkey,
and the pains that goes with it .
I think we should show them the negativity of DRUGS
at a young age because drugs are outside school gates already.
sorry but whenever i hear that a junkiie has overdosed i couldnt give a toss its one less lying, theiving, scheming piece of scum out of society and the only good drug addict is a dead one.yes you guessed it i hate druggies...
