Abortion
30 Answers
My friend is pregnant and she wants an abortion. She is very, very scared of general anaesthetic. Despite being 4 weeks pregnant when she got a referral her appointment at the clinic isnt until she is 9 and a half weeks, meaning the procedure will not be carried out until she is 10 weeks at the earliest. This means she has dipped out of the medical abortion zone. I read up on it for her, and apparently medical might be preferrable after 12 weeks anyway. So do you think they would let her wait until that time? Or has anyone actually heard of a termination being carried out under a local? I know its possible but dont know of anyone who has had it? If so what does it involve?

This surely should have been an operation so she didnt go through this stress, which has messed her up big style.
This is a huge thing for anybody to have to go through, i myself, although i hate to admit it have had an abortion, i also had to wait which made the whole thing even more unbearable. She wont be able i dont think to have a local and to be honest she wont want to have a local when going through something as traumatic as this.
Get her a councellor to deal with what lies ahead........she s going to need it

I worked with a young person whose baby had stopped growing at around 10 weeks, and when she bled at 14 weeks they gave her the tablets and sent her home. Similar to 4getmenot's friend, she had to go thorugh that at home, and then was still returned to hospital for blood transfusions, as she had lost so much. Make sure your friend is certain on dates, and firm with doctors (although I understand it's a sensitive time for her).
I don't know much about abortion, sorry.

I had a medical abortion, and I was made fully aware that I could see things I wouldn't want to see. This is of course how later abortions are carried out and the earliest ones, you can definitely have a local with the suction procedure I just dont know anyone who has had it.
She seems very certain on dates but of course that will be confirmed when she ahs her scan.

Without being too graphic they inserted a clampy thing inside me (like when you have a smear to open you up) and then injected what I guess was my cervix. Once that kicked in they inserted a tube which was attached to a machine I think (sorry trying to remember) and it, for want of a better word "sucked" everything out. as the tube is "sucking" it is quite uncomrtable and they carry on with this until you are empty. Afterwards was taken to a communal room and was told to try not use the toilet. Felt like my bladder was really full but my cervix was swollen from the trauma it had suffered. Sorry to sound so clinical but no easy way to put this. Was definitely the right decision for me at the time but I am having fertility problems now and my doctor says I have severe scarring of my tubes so seeing what options are available for me now.
4getmenot, I think she was upset and traumatised, but not long-term. How about your friend? Is she recovering?
If it were me, I think I'd be devastated. I am surprised this thread hasn't been deluged with pro-lifers, appalled that such an option is even being discussed...Hope I haven't spoken too soon!

Sorry not able to give medical advice here Goodso, but just wanted to say:
Isn't it refreshing that people can share their stories or ask for help about terminations on AB, without being condemned.
I feel for anyone who has had a termination, for whatever reasons - other than using it as birth control of course!
Hope your friend is okay soon.

I was a bit hesitant as to whether to post a reply on this thread as I was worried of being "condemned" but then I remembered that I felt really alone when I had my abortion and had a million questions I wanted to ask but was too embarrassed and ashamed to ask anyone. I have no problem talking about it but obviously it helps that we are pretty much anonymous on here
Browneyedgirl, I have posted on here previously about having an abortion and did have to think twice before I posted, but I reckoned if someone wanted to condem me they would. As it happened no-one did, and if I truely helped someone by explaining my experience then that was all that mattered, we all had our reasons for our actions and most people will not judge.
