Permanent hair removal devices

Such as the ones sold on the shelves at Boots: do they work and how many treatments do you need to do until the hair is completely removed? Are they safe? Also does anyone have recommendations for the best brand you can buy?

I bought an electrolysis machine once for about twenty quid. I'm sure it probably worked but I lost patience. For every hair you see growing there are some thousands dormant around it, so irradicating them one at a time would be a long job. I didn't see any obvious improvement so went back to previous methods.
