"For Jews male circumcision is the fulfilment of a Divine command (Gen.17.11 et seq). It is designated 13 times as a Brith (covenant), between the almighty and the jewish people. Unless there is a medical contraindication it should take place on the baby's eighth day even on the Sabbath or a holy day"
Muslims do it too. It was long thought to be somehow hygienic (though the same level of hygiene can be achieved by washing), and this may be the source of the religious requirement. It was fairly common until quite recently but seems to have fallen out of favour.
incidentally, Jesus would have been circumcised, and it is supposed the foreskin, having been long separated, would therefore not have ascended to heaven with him. It was believed to be in France but was stolen a while ago.
There you go Ratter, nip down to your local Synagogue and ask to see a Mohel, pronounced Moyle, he's the one that does the deed, If you do, let me know, i'd like to see it.
There used to be an ad for some new American car which showed it driving so smoothly across NYC despite all the potholes that a mohel was able to circumcise a baby in the back seat. No idea if this was real live.
