can it be passed through your system or does it have to be removed by surgery.

Hubby has had three. One required major surgery i.e. complete removal of the gall bladder, one removed itself (i.e. passed through) and one had to be removed using laser surgery. I am not sure about a stone in the digestive track, his were in his gall bladder, and latterly kidney stones. Don't worry the modern treatment is quite painless.
My wife had gallstones about 15 years ago and they were taken out leaving a huge scar across her stomach . I believe now in addition to the methods already mentioned that if the stones are small enough they can ''blast'' them with ultra sound so that they can pass out through the digestive system. She had her stones in the gall bladder and she said the pain they gave was worse than childbirth.
I had gallstones and two of mine went into my bile duct which i then became jaundiced, i had a minor op to remove them and later had a cholestectomy to remove the rest of the gallstones and remove the gallbladder itself. hope that helps.
