I awoke at 4:30 in a cold sweat this morning because I heard a woman call my name, it wasn't my wife who was fast asleep beside me. It kind of freaked me out as this has never happened to me before, it wasn't a voice I recognised, but it was crystal clear (I can still hear it now) and sounded 'urgent' if you know what I mean, as if to deliberatly waken me.
Has this happened to anyone else?

How weird, I woke up at 4.30 this morning calling out your name!

Seriously though, this has happened to me only once and it really freaked me out, have no rational explanation for it, sorry.
yes, Ive heard stuff like that. I have alwasy put it down to walking up from a dream state and not quite being awake

Ive also woken in middle of night to strong smell of burning and I even ran to my sons room the other night as i woke to burning and a smoke filled room. I was halfway across landing before i realised there was no fire or smoke but scared the hell out of me.
Hi warpig :-) Dont worry lambert Ive woken up to find octupuses comeing through my wall, giant ants in my bed I get sleep paralysis, where your body wakes up before you brain does. This woman would have been in your dream but because youre woken up you think you can hear her.
Sighs

Sorry William... but there was a spider in my shoe and someone really needed to deal with it!!

Yes, I had something like this happen before but I was just waking up and I think ti was just my brain playing tricks on me. I was probably still dreaming.
Should have added that this was in the middle of the night too, and the only thing I can think is that maybe it was something to do with whatever I was dreaming although I could not remember the dream (if there was one) and was 100% sure that I did hear it.

Thank god for your answers, I thought the old johnlambert mind was going wonky
Hi 4get, yep sleep paralysis is a rational explanation and having suffered it myself, it is completely scarey.
I have woke up lots of times like this thinking this has happened and all I can put it down to is lucid dreaming.

I also once awoke to see a huge black dog sitting in front of me and this turned out to be the wardrobe after my eyes re-focused themselves.

Also though I'd heard doorbells ring or glass being smalshed, all in my imagination.
Johnlambert , hi , did you forget to let that woman out of her hiding place in your wardrobe , tut , that''ll teach you ...lol
xx
I have had sleep paralysis before. The first time really frightened me. It felt like somebody was pinning me on the bed and try as I might I couldn't even open my eyes, I was trying to use all my energy to scream or move but it was exhausting, yet I could hear all that was going on around me. I eventually snapped out of it, it felts like ages but in reality was probably less than a minute or a couple of minutes and I was out of breath from tyring to move so hard. It really spooked me though.
I was awoken last night night to the sound of men screaming, bellowing and thumping. Sadly this was real and was coming from the kebab shop that I live above. I am now not going to order any kebabs for a very long time as I am convinced someone was being murdered! (well, maybe not that convinced)

Anyway, yes JL, I've also had experiences like this, don't worry, you're probably not losing it quite yet!
Apparently it used to be known as "Old Hag" because people believed it was spirits playing tricks on you.

But I cant remember dreaming!! I was fast asleep then there's this urgent sounding voice right next to my ear.
Is there someone going around everyone in the whole wide world breaking silently into peoples houses as they sleep, calling out their name, then disappearing the instant they open their eyes? it wasn't sleep paralysis, I'm a light sleeper and always wake up at the slightest noise awake and alert
I keep snapping out of sleep convinced I've heard a noise and go wandering round the house to investigate.
This morning at three thirty I heard something that was either a scream or a damp rubber gloves being dragged down glass. No evidence of either was found so I guess it must have been a dream.

This site is quite interesting, there is lots of stuff though if you google it.

No need to worry John, I don't think it was a message saving you from certain death ;-) xx

I'm not the kind of person who scares easily, but what disturbed me was the 'urgency' in her voice, as if she wanted me wide awake instantly
ok you're just a weirdo then :-)
I would have thought that being a light sleeper is more reason for a kind of sleep paralysis to occur, because you would spend less time in a deep sleep and more time in the "twilight" zone lol.

It does say on that site that it is possible to hear things as well as hallucinate (4get) of feel things (me).
How come your wife did'nt hear it JL if it was crystal clear?

Just an observation
