My Tooth -- Root Showing ?

My gum has shrunk (wth age ...) and there is a little hard lump at the bottom of the tooth. Could this be the root (it doesn't hurt) and can the dentist do anything? Apart from take out the tooth of course !!

I doubt it is the root as that is likely to be very painful. Probably your gums have receeded and this hard lump may be a build up of plaque (or something) that was there at the original level of the gum, only showing now due to the receeding. But your dentist is the person to ask

Oh, just remembered, my friend mentioned that something similar happened to one of her teeth and her dentist said something about a 'gum transplant'. I imagine this would involve taking a bit of health gum from somewhere else and attaching it to the receded bit (personally I had never heard of this until she mentioned it).
