You was told that you had to give up smoking/drinking for the sake of,

1} your own health {ie prolong life by 10 years}
2} pregnancy { could lose the baby}
3} A.N.Other {raising your family for example}

Would you without hesitation, or would it be one of the hardest decisions to make.

If it was just to prolong my life, I dont think that would be enough. But if it was for my unborn baby or my family, that would do it for me! Although that doesnt mean its going to be any easier giving up an addiction such as smoking.
1) I should I have asthma and been hospitalised with it recently. I gave up for 2 weeks and then started again.

2) the minute I suspected I was pregnant I gave up. Then started again when I finished breastfeeding....derrr

3) Yes.

Seems to be just myself I have little respect for, although I was warned that smoking is bad for my gall stones and I dont like that pain at all. So watch this space, Ill do it soon..........................ish!
i dont really get your question because 1 and 2 are true anyway, yet people still smoke!

bednobs.

I see what you mean.

Basically would you put drink'smoking in front of life, be it extending yours if you gave up, possibly losing a baby if you don't give up or your dead because you never gave up so your not there to raise your family.

Oh for god sake, you know what i'm trying to say, i hate typing lol
many would and do laurence .
the reason its addictive and many folk dont have the willpower to stop.

simple as that.

its like anything losing weight giving up heroin etc.
youve got to want to stop.
even drink too.

but most people dont want to and think it wont harm them its always someone else.
Yes to 2.

Nah to the rest.
I have given up both, smoking 11 years ago and drinking about the same time. it was for a pregnancy, I dont regret it at all, best of all the house smells nice and fresh, I dont miss drinking alcohol either :)
no
yes
no.
I gave up through my pregnancies and then started again afterwards.
i did give up smoking due to pregnancy , 5 years ago!
Best thing i did!

I would give up if it was going to susbstantially prolong my life, if it was a case of give up and you'll get an extra 6 months or so, then no i cant say i would. Enjoy whats left, the little pleasures in life. If however i was told IF you dont give up you will die, then i would immediately give it up, no question!

Its a personal choice though and as an ex smoker i can understand why people don't . smoking and drinking are both seriously addictive, its not an easy thing to do.

choice niumber three is a toughie because we all know the dangers of smoking and drinking but we still do it. My dad was a big drinker and a heavy smoker and he passed away at 60 from a massive heart attack that killed him on the spot!

They are selfish habits but thats human nature i guess. I used to beg my dad to give up both but he never did so ultimately it was a selfish act. However it didnt stop me taking up smoking but as regards drinking, i am very wary of when i feel i might be having too much too often and give my body a rest to avoid getting addicted. I want to be able to enjoy having a drink for the rest of my life, nott go overboard now and pay the price later.
Diagnosed with asthma in 94 - gave up my 40 a day 40 odd year habit straight away. It was hard.

Diagnosed with liver problems in May - gave up alcohol. It is hard, but only a fool would carry on.
You're right Ethel. A friend of ours had problems with her liver & was warned that her alcohol consumption would only make it worse. She gave up for a short while, but soon started again. She died last year aged 62, leaving her husband, two children & four grandchildren.

So I take my hat off to you & wish you well.
