unfortunately in an accident at home 2 weeks ago, both of my legs are in plaster and I am obviously off work sick. The firm I work for are sympathetic but are wanting to send an Occupational Therapist to my home to see me. Is this normal and what will they be looking for me to do? Could my job as a field based sales rep be in trouble? I am on my probationary period am doing well and there are no other issues, is this just normal company procedure>

It is perfectly normal - assuming you are on full pay whilst off sick.

Normal procedure.
Oh dear chesnots , dare I ask how on earth you managed to do that ! You poor soul , bet that was painful to say the least .
Don't worry about the Occupational therapist , she/he will be checking on how you are managing with daily routine , such as bathing , dressing , and cooking , and , of-course, your general means of mobility. :-)
No they won't - the OT will be trying establish how long you will be off sick for, if there will be any permanent injuries that could have a future effect on your job, and the possibility of you working in another capacity until you are fit enough to return to your nomal job.

They honestly won't give a stuff about how you are coping on the domestic front, unless it impedes your recovery.

Thanks for your kindness Bigmamma but your straightness Ethel. like I said I am on probationary so am only receiving their sick pay. The reasons you have given to me they did mention. Is this still the norm?

Thanks Louisa will look at that carefully, hope its reassuring x
Oh ouch chestnuts- I recently broke my wrist and that was ruddy painful, can't imagine what two broken legs feels like. How on earth are you coping with everyday things??? The mind boggles!
Sorry Chestnuts i should have said before on my earlier post i'm sorry to hear of your accident i can't even imagine what that must be like for you not to be able to do the things we all take for granted. I wish you a speedy recovery x
Yes it is very normal. They need to cover their own backs re compensation claims and so on if they aggravate your condition.

So, the OT will need to clarify several things - that you are off sick for the reasons you say, that you are not doing anything to hinder recovery, that you neither return to work too soon nor delay your return and when you do return to the workplace you are fully fit for the work you are given, whether your normal job, or an infill job until you are fully fit.

The OT is paid by your employer, and you must co-operate fully. Show you are willing to return to work in a suitable capacity as soon as you are mobile - or is there work you could reasonably do at home?

Be reassured this is all very normal procedure and really nothing to be fretting about.
