The price of freedom.

I have never worked much since I left school, living mainly on benefits.
I have been offered a job, but the hours are 35 per week, with a 1 hour lunch break included, is this the average, as the hours seem a bit long?
I usually have three holidays per year, a month in Europe, two different countries and four weeks in the Far East in November.
Will I be allowed the same amount of time off, with pay, or do people have less holidays than this?
I would love to contribute more to society, but the thought of a full time job, really depresses me.
Your thoughts and advice, would be greatly appreciated, especially if it helps me, reach a decision.

I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah. And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.

Well, it does all sound a bit strenuous my goodness! 35 hours a week! Rather frightening thought having to work all those hours, especially with such pathetic holiday time.
Perhaps you should consider being a member of the clergy. Everyone knows that they only work about 90 minutes a week - on Sundays Other than that they just wear soft soled shoes and go on holiday retreats. And if you ever feel you need some extra cash theres a box in the back of the church where you can just help yourself. Crum, everyone else does, why shouldnt you? Rather than all that stress, especially in your driving such an old car, you could get the congregation to just give you a new car. The other nice thing is that you would seldom have to cook. People invite you to their homes for dinner all the time. Of course, theyll just tell you its for a friendly visit. But be warned. They really might want to complain about other people in the church or try to force you into doing something you dont think is best for anyone else. So just tell them to leave the food at your doorstep.
Finally, there are some extremely rude people who will call you to tell you the most boring things, like their children or parents died. Sometimes theyre just trying to manipulate you by saying theyre dying. Those are the most selfish people of all. Dont they know that everyone is dying?
Just tell them youre busy and besides, what does it have to do with you. Tell them youll talk to them on Sunday. Thats when your job is, not any other time. The nerve of those selfish people!
Yes, you may have a point. Its a frightening world out there. Perhaps you could consider a job that doesnt require any thinking at all, no work and all fun. Forget the 35 hour week and become an MP!
See. Doesnt that feel better?

Many thanks for your understanding and compassion Father Bill, it makes a change from the vitriolic attacks, that I have had to endure, because of my reluctance to accept an offer of work. Christians have been persecuted through the ages and I must say, I feel like one of them now.
Anyway, I am about to be married soon and my bride to be has indicated, that she would like a large family, imagine having to run after all those little angels, I just hope she will be able to manage them all.
I know she will be delighted, that you have taken the trouble to reply, as her religion means a great deal to her.
My deepest thanks, once again.

dolly pond, 21 hours would be ideal.
I had a feeling 35 hours were rather long, but have been criticised for saying so.
I thought your earnings were a bit low, but I suppose you can manage, if you are a bit careful with your spends.
I usually go out, about three nights a week, as its all I can afford, but with the new smoking laws, I find I am saving a bit on cigarettes, or so I thought, but I just end up drinking more.
Being an estate agent sounds like a great idea, as we will have to look for a much bigger house, when we start our family, and we could save on all those fees.
Money will be tight for the first few years, but I'm sure our love, will see us through.

I hope this is a joke.
3 holidays per year. I have not had one in 5 years. A car that's a year old. I drive a car that's 8 years old. Stupid me. I worked by butt off to go to college, now have 2 degrees and still work more than 1 job.
I know there are those in US who live exactly the life cambus does. While I hope this is a joke, it is all too possible he/she is for real.
