I imagine this is the problem though, they will fix the disc that is causing the problem and for a couple of years that should make you feel brilliant, sometimes people need more operations and the effects of the op can wear off but sciatica is agony so its worth the going through.
2 nights in hospital sometimes home the same day. Depends on the type of op as to how long your recovery will be though.

the nerve is traped at the L4 or L5 disk and I think the doc said it was a collapsed prolapse ( all Greek to me) I had courtesan injections no help what so ever very painful I dont want another . there is no pain in my back now its manly in my foot .my right leg has a lot of wastage approx 1/3 smaller than my left leg
Wow, sorry to hear that dustypuss. I've been suffering since about April, but not to your degree. Mine was through the left buttock and down my left thigh, and I couldn't walk after sitting for any length of time. Osteopathy didn't help, but exercise has to the point where it's clearing up on its own.
Unfortunately it's not going to work for you if your is trapped by a disc rather than by the muscle like mine, but I can feel your pain! Good luck

the reason the pain is in your foot is that the sciatic nerve runs all the way down your back, over you bum and down your leg so anything pinching on it causes pain. Like Nick, I had pain from it getting trapped near my sacrum so it was curable by physio and exercise. Those discs are near the base of your spine and very commonly injured. In the interim period, get yourself a tens machine, they are little wonders for back pain. DOnt put it on high straight away (because it will hurt), keep it on gently and when you are having bad times increase it.
Once you have had your operation, you must keep up the physio to make your back stronger.

Before you resort to surgery try and find a good chiropractor. They frequently have much better results than going under the knife.
You will need several visits since it has been out for so long but generally they will provide considerable relief on the first visit.
These problems are usually from muscle or ligament injuries that makes the spine misalign and leads to prolapsed discs between the vertebra. These displaced cartilages press on the nerves causing pain.
You can probably get some relief by laying face down and pushing your upper body upwards, effectively arching the lower back backwards. Move the legs away from the side witht he pain. This can sometimes release the prolapse but after a long time wrong you will probably need help.

Hi dusty puss,
Sciatica is no fun.
I have daily pain due to Sciatica and have been to Chiropractors and have tried other conservative options, however I have been told that surgery is my only option now.
Due to my spine trapping nerves and causing excrutiating pain down my legs and Disc degeneration causing my spine to collapse, I am going in for a Multi level spinal fusion operation in January, this will relieve the trapped nerves and hopefully give my life back. Its a big op and I really am not looking forward to it.
A good website is www.spine-health.com. It has answers to all back problems.
What is the operation that you are having?

Sorry to hijack this would-be sensible thread, but I have to say that when I first joined AB, the icemaiden, printed in that way, was accepted as my user name. I can quite easily share it with someone else - especially if they used it first, but not only could it be confusing - it could get nasty! I've already been booted off for no specific reasons, so you can imagine that I'm not too happy - as is the "other" person, perhaps.
