The most important thing to be aware of is the process must be done in a clean and sterile manner. Hands must be washed thoroughly and then gloves worn. Obviously she must avoid any person who has any sort of infection(colds, flu etc). I'm not sure about side effects but the hospital will explain everything to you and you can always ring the nurse at the GP practice for advice at any time.It will take a bit of getting used to for her as well as the family members who are giving the transfusions but i'm sure you will all cope with it. Good luck with it all.
