does anyone know the relevance of water in dreams? I have a recurring dream which usually involves the tide coming in very quickly and me having to climb a cliff or something to escape it - quite frightening - been happening on and off now for about 10 years so I think it must be trying to tell me something!

According to CG Jung, the sea in dreams represents the subconscious mind, so it seems you are trying to run away from something in your subconscious; some memory perhaps, or something about yourself which you don't want to face up to. In any case, don't let it worry you too much.
Some books say it has to do with your feelings towards your mother.
Water is supposed to represent your feelings or emotions. Water is also a symbol of cleansing, healing, new life or spiritual rebirth & the unconscious. To help you know how you are feeling you need to notice if the water is stagnant or freeflowing, dirty or clean. If you dream about waves it could represent your desire to make waves. Or you just may need to recharge your batteries. A tidal wave for example might indicate the threat of being overwhelmed by emotions or an emotional disaster. Hope this helps
if the water is tidal this can mean change of mind it probaly means their is some thing you must come to terms with but you are trying to ignore. try to think of the dream before you go to sleep so that you relize its a dream and then either look at the water or let it wash over you, this should stop the dream or even let you relize what caused it
