Clothes sizing

How is it that a woman can say she is many stones(don't do metric)heavier than myself, yet takes a similar clothes size? I appreciate that they are likely to be taller than me as I'm only 5 foot 1 ins and maybe bigger built, but even still, there seems to be such a disparity?

I know what you mean marion29. I think it depends where you shop what size you are. My wardrobe sizes vary from 18 to 22 and i wear them all! I think ladies clothing should be sized in a similar way to mens. Waist and length on trousers etc, so that we can go into any shop and know the sizes would be the same.

maybe its down to bone size marion? I am really tiny boned and my daughter who is just an inch taller than me can weigh anything up to a stone and a half more than me and still get the same size clothes. I guess she is heavy boned.

Easily done, me and my sis were discussing this yesterday about baby sizes, someone might have a baby weighing 7lbs but have to have c section because it could be wide and short rather than skinny and long. Its really the same as the question �which weighs more a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks.

It used to make me laugh, when Vanessa Feltz and Dawn French used to say they took a size 16 or an 18!!!

They are much bigger than me, yet my size flucuates between being a 16/18.

I understand that Dawn french burst onto our TV screens as a size 16 - but looked bigger because of her height and with being next to some other very slim actors.

Unfortunately many people fib about their dress size.
My sister in law is a prime example. She swears she is a size 14 but I've checked her labels and I know she is size 20.
This may tie in with her eating habits. When the pub shuts she heads for a takeaway and buys TWO large pizzas or doner kebabs, saying one is for the dog.

She doesn't have a dog.

sizes are verying between different shops, i can fit in size 8 in monsoon's cloths, but once i tried a dress in topshop, i need ask 14 for that one.

Lol Mrs. O!!! I knew someone who took a size 32 dress, but told everyone it was an 18. Even the label said that - but she'd had it made, and the label sewn in on purpose!!!

In the case of my sis in law, she is a lovely person with the most beautiful face. We accept her as she is but she tells so many lies it annoys us to death.

Well I can guarantee I take a size 12, and weigh at least 10lbs more than my friend who is a very similar size and same height. We swap clothes all the time for nights out. I believe it is down to muscle mass in my case, as I work out lots and she doesnt. Dont care that I weigh more, I am much fitter and more toned.

Out of interest, I am 5' 8" and weigh nearly 11 stone, yet I wear size 10-12 depending on where I shop. I bet there are lots of women of my weight that are about a size 16 if they are really short.

Yes, I think it all depends where you shop say in new look a size 10 will fit me perfect but if I go in Karen Millen I can need a 14!!
I also hate the shops that have the size 4's in as I used to think I was ok at a size 10 until I saw them
I seem to go in the shops I feel good buying clothes that fit nice

mamma, have you tried la redoute? they have french fashion in really small sizes and petite lengths too, and its really really cheap!!!

I work in fashion retail. We stock clothes from several different suppliers and I agree that sizes can vary quite a lot. It can depend very much on the target consumer group. A size 14 top aimed at teenagers would probably measure about the same as a size 10 top aimed at 'the more mature lady'.
And believe me, we've seen it all in our shop... some people are just so much in denial about their size. Why??? Try it on and if it fits you and you like it, buy it. Never mind what the number on the label says!!!
We have one regular customer, in particular, who is a size 20, who, when she buys something she always asks us to swap the size cube on the hanger to a 16 so that her husband thinks she's a smaller size - ?!!!
And another lady who's size 18-20 and buys everything in size14 without trying them on, then returns the lot a few days later. Whenever we manage to persuade her to try on things in her proper size she looks lovely in them, but never buys them.

I can't work out what it is, when two people can be the same height, take the same size clothes - yet one might weight quite a bit more than the other. I think shop sizes just vary so much. H & M seem to err on the generous side, the same as Dorothy Perkins, but a shop next door could be the opposite. Tbh, I don't think it matters much, so long as people feel alright in whatever they decide to wear. There's too much emphasis put on the perfect size - which seems to get lower by the month. If we all looked the same, now that WOULD be boring.

im having trouble with jeans, out of 6 pairs in bay one fitted, they were all size 12, 5 of the pairs were too small, i bought the one pair that fitted but they are going out type jeans! in dorothy perkins, a size 12 long fitted lovely but decided they were too long so went back and swapped for exactly the same but in regular and they are far too small but the 14 were too big! GRRRR!! having one pair of day to day jeans is very annoying!
