sp - I believe they do. Lots of studies have been made in this. Sometimes brought on to distance a person from an unpleasant experience.

Yes, sometimes the personality splinters as a form of dissociation, sometimes it's just a manifestation of an underlying neurological disorder.
A personality is not like a 'ghost' in the machine, however, it's a construct of the brain, for the subjective self, to flesh out the idea of self an allow the self to interact with others and appraise its own actions. You can see from the last sentence how much room there is for situations to create a 'personality' which 'self-rejects' or is hugely inappropriate in certain circumstances: so the brain creates a few of them.
Multiple personality disorder is commonly referred to as 'schizophrenia' and vice versa by the unwitting. Schizophrenia is indeed a splitting of the mind, but in a way that it fails to integrate various cues about reality. This is different from the personality itself splitting.

I have yet to be convinced that DID is a genuine mental illness,it has been faked many times by people trying to get out of long prison sentences by saying that one of their "other personalities" committed the crime.

hell yeah they exist! Apparently it can be classed as a mental disorder like schizophrenia or M.P.D (multi personality disorder).

This maybe the case in western society, but i think its important to mention that there are actually some cultures who embrace such apparent mental illnesses. Im sorry i cant give any referances (think is from my A-level course) but there is one culture who actually embrace schizophrenia, and as a result make the person some kind of god or something similar.

The fact is...mental illness is defined by psychologists...who in my opinion have no right - their studies are generally outdated and some incrediably flawed...psychology wants to be a science but it never will be.

Besides...if you didnt already know...most psychologists are actually arrogant b*******s. They forget one teeny tiny detail (and try to put us all into groups, even in personality terms)...and its what makes us all individual...
