I was in the Post Office today and in front of me was an oldish quite overweight woman who smelt absolutely disgusting! It wasn't just a bit whiffy I mean really rotten stale horrible smell to the point where I was practically gagging. I just wondered how an earth she has ended up as bad as that and if she would be getting any help. I mean she can't have had a bath for around a year at least. Who helps these people?

it was probbaly a down stairs wiff, as well as an upstairs wwiff if you see what i mean ,,,,, i m a bit of a soap dodger myself ,,,
I work in a shop and you should see (or smell) some of the customers we get! You wouldn't believe how many cans of air freshener we get through....

One bloke is disgusting - I dont think he has ever changed his clothes and the front of his sweatshirt is just caked in food (Pot Noodle I think, that all he buys so I assume it is all he eats). His hair is matted and he STINKS.

The sad thing is, he is a relatively nice bloke and has only gone downhill in the years since his wife died. He tries to talk to us (I think he's lonely) but because of the state of him, no-one wants to be near him.

One of the girls at work actually rang social services about him a year or so ago but they went round and checked on him and nothing else. As far as I know, he's got no other family.

The thing that worries me though, if he is that dirty and smelly, imagine what his house must be like? I'm sure we will see him on 'Life of Grime' or similar in the future!
lol i haven't had a bath for 10 years
There's loads of them round here, usually standing outside, we call them smokers, uuggghhh they don't arf niff!
When this happends to me I refuse to smell if and put my clothing over my nose and mouth...I dont care if they or anyone else knows why im doing it, why should I stand there smelling filth! lol

I guess some people, for whatever reason, don't care about their personal appearance or hygiene. Recently, in my local Co-operative store, (on two ocassions) I was served by extremely smelly members of staff.

The first assistant was female and she had a rotton smell of unwashed lady bits, it was indescribable. The second time, including today, I was served by some kind of Stig of the dump character. He had long greasy hair, dirty fingernails, bad acne, was unshaven and stank.

I've already complained to the Co-operative's head office and they promised to contact the operations manager, this was over a week ago and Stig still hasn't cleaned up his act.

I mean, when he's scanning food products, you just don't want him touching them, with those skanky hands.
I was in a Post Office recently where there was only one other customer and it was quite obvious that the smell was coming from this man. I had to back away from him and open the door as the smell of BO was so overwhelming I was scared to breathe for fear of burning my lungs! After he left, I could see the poor staff's relieved state and I left the door open for them to try and circulate some air.
The man who lost his wife deserves more help. He's obviously in a state of deep depression.
I've also encountered smelly people in Post Offices over the years, usually collecting a benefit of some kind. As most of our Post Offices are closing down, we won't have to go through standing in a smelly queue anymore.
I think some people seem to smell it more than others, I know I mention horrible smells other people don't seem to pick up on.

When I worked in a supermarket we used to keep a can of air freshener handy for one particular customer who obviously wasn't able to look after herself properly. There were a few though, very sad and so hard to have a nice chat with them because of the smell.

I've worked with a lot of severely disabled people, both physically and mentally and with the proper care there is no need for them to smell like that, they're not being cared for properly which is really sad.
I can't help but always wonder of these people - what must their bed smell like? I bet you they never change their sheets. I work with one woman who smells and wears the same clothes every day - I know that other coleagues have complained about this but it's as if the bosses are too embarassed to make an issue of it. It's a shame because she is quite a nice person but you do feel like telling her a bar of soap only costs pennies.
What's worse is that she works in the personnel department herself.

Ha ha, we had another customer who used to STINK. You could tell he was in the shop even if you couldn't see him.

He actually used to buy bars of soap, I reckon he must have been eating them 'cos he sure as hell wasn't washing with them!
Years ago a man who looked like Captain Birdseye used to get on the bus I got on. He absolutely stank of urine/amonia. He would sit at the front and eveybody would get up and move to the back. Don't know whats happened to thim now though.
Aaaaaaaaaaah......heartless remarks.

Some people have colostomy bags which cause them to smell. (That's their poops filtering into a fitted bag) instead of expended normally.

Some are veggies.....who blow like horses, in motion.

Why not proffer some free wipes for them to try? Perhaps bathing is an issue due to an ailment?

Hair is a good guide to personal cleanliness; if they do have dirty hair, then, yes they haven't/cant bathe.

well said terambulan my son was a great lad a right good laugh at one point in his life untill he had a mental breakdown, now it is like talking to the wall, after years of help and treatment being on pills etc he has put on lots of weight has no concern of how he looks food down his clothes etc,but there are people there that have a good reason for smelling not looking as good and being as perfect as you lot seem to be on here.you should spend more time maybe trying to help people like that and maybe even saying to them that they do smell and maybe that will help them think they need a bath.instead of just spraying smellies when they gone, stop being two faced and making out u r the perfect ones.
well said southern..i totally agree......too many critics on here!!!!!!!!! theyre allways the first to put people down when they need help or advise......u know who you are!!!!!!!!
I had to pop to the loo in a a motorway service place last weekend. I was pleasantly surprised by how clean the loos were. Then....this young teenage girl walks out of a cubicle, and she smelt like old cheese. She was overweight, and I recognised the smell from the elderly home that I used to work in. It's the sort of mildewy smell from bacteria growing in skin creases. That's me put off my breakfast. ;-)
re: co-op comment, totally agree some of the staff are totally minging, have you seen there uniforms?
but it is like it across most supermarkets you get the good the bad and the dam ugly.
However i work on a bakery/deli dep in a store. When i am putting bread out or serving customers the ones that honk make me retch and i can not help it. Especially if they lean over you and you have to have there whole body in your face cos you cant escape.
Totally agree thought that it can be medical,(week old dressings really hum!), mental or through a lack of personal interest, maybe they have given up respect in themselves, or they just dont give a dam.
Service station toilets are inspected every 15 minutes, check out cleaning/checks on the back of the main door, interesting the things you pick up when stood in a queue.
Thats funny Mum didnt mention she was going out today
