The early signs are forgetfulness, and asking a question repeatedly after short intervals. It is important to get an early diagnosis, because treatment can be more effective, so if you think a family member or friend is showing these signs, get them to have a chat with their GP.
Recent studies have indicated that you can detect Alzheimers by under going an MRI scan (brain scan). Researchers found that shrinkage of the hippocampus, a region of the brain showing some of the first signs of Alzheimers disease, occurs very early in the disease process long before the illness spreads to the cerebral cortex and results in cognitive and memory impairment. However, the first signs are generally taken to be memory loss (constant and often). For example, asking a question over and over again because they forget the answer. Also trouble performing daily tasks, disorientation (not knowing where they are, or where they live), poor judgement (eg wearing wrong clothes in cold weather)
My nan has Altzeimer's, and is still in the early stages although it began about 3-4 years ago that you would notice. She began, as andy says, repeating of questions, short term memory loss and forgetfulness. The doctor was able to diagnose pretty much from asking simple questions such as "what year is it?", "what day is it", "who is the prime minister?", etc. The biggest problem is people cannot be confirmed as having the disease until they agree to go for further tests, and who wants to be told that they are losing their mind? A lot of people do no want to take the tests, and thus cannot be treated. Be very sensitive and supportive and I'm sure with early treatment things ill look more hopeful :) Good luck :)

Thanks for your answers. I was actually just curious. My Nan has had Altzeimers for many years and I just wondered if it could have been spotted sooner.
