Anyone had one? Thinking of getting quite a large one on my upper arm. How 'painful' is it, if at all, and is it more so having one filled/coloured in?

So when I had it re-done that hurt a bit because it was new skin but either way I love it and dont regret it. just research exactly what you want first remember its there forever!

I have lots! It is an individual thing where your most painful places are but I would say that the outside of your upper arm would tend to be less painful for most people.
My worst was upper back, my husbands worst is his lower legs. I've got my armpits done and it was fine, but I know for a lot of people the inside of their upper arm is awful, or their chest.
For me, it feels like someone has put a pin just into your skin and is pulling it along. It feels huge, even though it might be a small tattoo. For me, the outline is more painful than the filling in, but again it depends where it is.
You need to tell your tattoo artist that it is your first time so they can ease you in gently.
It's really not unbearably painful - why would people get more if it was, but it is quite addictive!
What are you thinking of getting?

I really don't know. I thought I had an idea in mind until I started looking online - there are so many amazing designs! I was looking at a simple black tribal design. I promised myself I'd get one on the birth of my son - he's one in August so I thought I'd mark the occasion with something I've always wanted to do.
Be very certain that you want to do this. My daughter had a very deep, black Celtic design done on her uppper arm when she was 16.....after a few years she started to realise it was not the kind of 'image' she wanted to present. Even in hot weather she felt the need to cover it up. Now-at 22-she is in the early stages of having it removed......at 130 per session (1 down, aprox 5 more to go)......and removal is VERY painful.
My daughter has just had a tattoo on her lower back to one side which i think is sensible as she can cover it up.
We talked about how it would look having a visible one and she realised it wouldnt look that good on her wedding day or in a lovely dress.
Glad she saw sense (only my opinion of course!)

Had mine done about 2 months ago on my inner wrist just touching my hand - I have a high tolerance for pain and to be honest I was dissapointed, it didnt hurt at all. Mine is all colour no black. My sister got one done week beofre last and she said her outlining was painful hers is on her stomach. I agree with Sally getting it somewhere not so obvious is wise. I have alot of peircings and for some reason thought I would like a tattoo but TBH I hate it. Not the design just the fact that I see it all the time. I am seriously considering removal, as it isnt growing on me. I would suggest that if you find a design you like give it a month and if you still like it then get it done. I hear removal is painful but it would be worth it my opinion.

I had a few trial henna ones done where I was thinking of getting a tattoo done to see how I liked the look and how it would like for work etc, I ended up getting 2 done on my shoulder blade (very painful like a wasp sting being dragged through your skin) I felt really sick during it, but I'm really pleased with it and 7 years on have no regrets, I can cover it up when I want and show it people if and when I want as well. I'd love to get more but they're pricey!
Good luck, think ahead and ask in 5 years time will I still like this? in 10 years time? etc. Also be careful what you have, I've to chinese symbols which are symbolic to me. A friend had tweety pie on her leg and regretted it.

Got 2,
Dragon on shoulderblade, small devil on breast.
The devil didnt bother, but the dragon felt more painful when been done, both can be covered when needed.
Think carefully where you want 1 doing and the size of it,especially as it will be your first
Check out the place where your thinking of having it done as well, ask to see if they have photos of previous work done.Check it out first,if in doubt don't go there, no parlour should object to you asking to look first.
ps
watch out they can get addictive
