Help! White patches on tonsils. In extreme pain!!!

For the past three days I've had white patches on my right tonsil. My throat is extremely sore, I have a stuffy and runny nose, and have been sneezing a lot. What is it that I have? Please, I'm desperate for answers as soon as possible.

Think you need to see the doc, could be tonsillilitis and you will need a antibotic!!!!

You have tonsillitis, but an antibiotic will not help as the cause of it is viral. YOu have to sit it out, I'm afraid. But remember that the white stuff on your tonsills is GOOD- it is produced as an effort to combat infection. Your tonsills act like little guards either side of your throat and they react when they find a foreign body/invader in the shape of germs! They do this to try and catch the germs, so don't be tempted to prod it etc. It is just your body's way of fighting your infection.

poor you. I feel very sorry for you. Tonsilitis is awful. Very painful. You can't even curl up on the sofa and comfort eat can you? I would drink as much fluid as you can, maybe send someone to the shop for favourite ice lollies and ice cream. Take paracetamol and ibruprofen and sleep as much as you can. x x

When I used to get tonsilitis I was always given anti-biotics, this was the only way to get my temperature down. I'd get to the doctor's.

If it was quinsy there would be an obvious swelling in the throat,like a cyst or growth.

I was always led to believe that such infections could be viral or bacterial. If the latter they respond to antibiotics but not otherwise.

Quite correct yogasun and that is why a GP opinion is required.

Most doctors don't prescribe antibiotics for tonsillitis - by the time they've taken the blood test to determine whether it is viral or bacterial and got the results back, the symptoms have gone.

I was dead scared once when a friend came to see me with her child who she announced had tonsillitis. I had the lead part in a musical the following week and certainly didn't want to catch it! I made her walk to the park with me - it was a very cold, windy day so we all suffered. The following day, I woke up with the realisation I had my tonsils out when I was 18!

Sqad- it usually is viral; I get it a lot and my Doc never gives me anything for it. If you have other symptoms then antibiotics may help, but don't go to the Doctors expecting to be given anything for tonsillitis.

You can still get tonsillitis even if you have had your tonsils out. Tonsillitis is a sort of catch all term for an infection of the throat (according to my GP).

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the helpful advice. I was really worried there cause I didn't know what was going on. I went to see a doctor today and he told me it WAS tonsillitis. I was perscribed antibiotics, so I'm hoping that it will go away in a couple days. Hopefully it will, but thanks again for your helpful advice. It was really helpful. :)

Crisgal,my daughter was hospitalised for 9 days when she was 16 because of quinsy,she also managed to contract glandular fever at the same time and was very ill.She has an allergy to penicillin so couldn't take traditional antibiotics either.We all had to wear gloves masks and aprons when visiting her,as did all the nurses and cleaners who entered her side ward.Not an experience I would wish on anyone!!!
