Embracing Disability!
6 Answers
hi, i have been, for want of a better word "disabled" for the last few years. However, i have never considered myself or felt disabled in this time. recently i have had a few more health problems which have left me feeling disabled, so now i have decided to embrace my new found "job" in life and really get in the swing of things. (hey, the wages are crap, but the benefits in kind can be amazing) I have found out i can get free cavity wall and loft insulation from my council, and a free assessment fro SS and my husband gets a carers assessment by the simple expedient of being in receipt of DLA (which ive been getting for about six years). Does anyone else know of any more perks of the "job" i could get, bearing in mind i am in reciept of top rate DLA for mobility, and middle rate for care, but no means tested benefits, as i have a second , "real" full time job. I have to admit i sometimes consider throwing thisjob over to become a full time cripple, but not quite yet :) Anyway, any other perks i should know about?

Reminds me of a few years ago when pre cup final attraction was to see Tommy Smith ex. Liverpool footballer, run 50 yds and banged in a penalty in full view of TV. He was on a full DISABILITY pension.

Hello Bednobs
A well-kept secret is that if u r on top mobility DLA, u get free road tax. They r supposed to tell u so if u haven't got that, ring helpline 08457123456 and they will send u a form to kick start it. Worth having
Also u may qualify for council tax reduction - it's means-tested but they give a "premium" (allowance) because of DLA, so even if you weren't eligible before, this might take you into the happy world of ct benefit.
Also - not being nosy about age, but if u r by any chance over 60 u could get Pension Credit, with an increase owing to DLA and husband's CA.
Good luck! It is a minefield but worth persevering.
